North Shore:

St. John is well known for its well-preserved natural beauty and attractive beaches, thanks in the main to 60% of the Island is protected by the Virgin Islands National Park. Along the north coast, there is also a multitude of moorings available, and you’re actively encouraged to use them and avoid anchoring unless all of the moorings are already taken.

Mooring Buoys:

  • Leinster Bay:  20 buoys for Overnight
  • Fungi Passage:  1 buoy for Overnight
  • Whistling Cay:  3 buoys for Overnight
  • Francis Bay:  29 buoys for Overnight
  • Maho Bay:  28 buoys for Overnight
  • Cinnamon Bay:  8 buoys for Overnight
  • Trunk Bay:  4 buoys for Overnight
  • Hawksnest Bay:  13 buoys for Overnight
  • Caneel Bay:  22 buoys for Overnight
  • Lind Point:  4 buoys for Overnight

South Shore:

Anchoring is not permitted along the southern shore of St John, although there are moorings in several of the bays.

Moorings:

  • Salt Pond Bay: 2 buoys for Overnight

Just 8NM from Cowpet Bay, the entrance is just before Booby Rock. Rocks are visible at all times at the entrance and should not pose any problems, you can pass on either side of them. The bay has one of the nicest beaches in the Virgin Islands and the snorkeling is excellent. The bay is protected from every direction except south.

  • Little Lameshure: 5 buoys for Overnight
  • Great Lameshure: 14 buoys for Overnight

Located just west of Salt Pond Bay, both bays are well protected except in a strong southerly breeze. Note the rock between the two bays.
