It is important that yachts do not stop at any of the other islands before clearing in (or out) at Funafuti. If you do so, even for an emergency, you might face difficulties with the police in Funafuti.
In the past it was possible to request permission to visit some of the Outer Atolls, (including Nukufetau & Namumea), however, this concession has been abused by some yachts and there are now new procedures in place.
Permit procedures require both Immigration AND Customs to each sign off on a permit AFTER they obtain approval from local Atoll Chiefs. This can take a few days so be prepared to wait. Cost is dependent on the atoll and the activities you wish to do.
Permits are obtained at the Town Council building in Funafuti near the wharf (09°30.988S / 179°11.944E).
An Anchorage Fee of AUD$70AUD has to be paid to the cashier on the ground floor of Town Council building.
All islands and areas within the Conservation Area are prohibited. However, you can get approval to visit the islands on the East side, NE and SE side of the atoll.
See Tuvalu Formalities for more details.
This atoll lies about 85NM NNW of Funafuti. The lagoon can be entered via the Teafua Pass with good depth. Consequently, it tends to be the "easier" atoll for the majority of yachts to visit. There are several good, protected anchorages, depending on the wind, but none give great protection at high water when the wind is from the west.
There is Internet at the government station at the telecom building. There is a bank where you can change money, but no ATM machine.
There are several small shops with basic staple foods but if the supply ship is due (or late) then the shelves are likely to be bare.
This welcoming and friendly atoll lies 200nm NW of Nukefetau. There is a well marked, but shallow and narrow channel through the reef which does put off some deep-drafted vessels. Beware of the strong tidal flow. The anchorage is calm and well sheltered by the island and the reef.
The Internet is available in the telecom building. There is no ATM, however, you can exchange money at the bank.
Gas (petrol) is available from some local stores.
There are a lot of small stores with basic supplies only.
