Kalmar is a pleasant town with the beautiful Kalmar Castle only an 800 meter walk through pleasant gardens. The castle dates back from 1397 and was the site of the Kalmar Union, a treaty uniting Norway, Sweden and Denmark under Queen Margrethe. Superp Domkirk with three organs (frequent free concerts). Another jewel of Kalmar is the remains of the "Kronan", a ship which sank in 1676 with the loss of 800 men. It was salvaged in 1980 with much of the fixtures and fittings, especially the personal possessions of the crew intact even down to some remarkably preserved clothing. At the time it sank it was the third largest ship in Europe. (January 2009).
