Well’s and Ladder Bays - Docking

Anchorage:

There are two designated anchorage zones within the Saba National Marine Park: one between Ladder Bay and Wells Bay (west side) and one off of the Fort Bay Harbour.

Fort Bay offers better protection in strong NE winds, while Ladder and Wells Bays are more sheltered in SE winds. The anchorage here is only really comfortable in calm weather.

Moorings:

Moorings G-W are located along the shore between Wells Bay and Ladder Bay, see the map on the Saba Port website for more details. Cruisers report some moorings may be missing–also they are quite small and may be difficult to spot. Park staff request that you run your own rode through the mooring pendant; the marine park is trying to prevent chafing of their mooring lines.

Beware of the ferocious Katabatic winds coming down the volcano. Some of the moorings are quite close to shore, so be sure to check your mooring well and if conditions are such, post an “anchor watch” at all times.

Dingy Dock:

From the anchorage at Well’s and Ladder Bays to the Fort Bay dinghy dock is almost a 2 nm dinghy ride. Note you must stay 150 metres offshore of any dive boats moored in the area, so it is a wet ride. Only recommended if you have a good RIB, powerful outboard and conditions are calm.

There is a small beach at the anchorage where you can land the dinghy in calm conditions, but it’s not recommended to try this in any swell. There is a road from the beach and taxis operate on the island, so you can arrange a pickup (see https://www.sabatourism.com/about-saba/#getting-around for taxi numbers).

If conditions are very calm, an alternative way of getting ashore is to climb The Ladder, an 800-step stairway leading from the small rocky beach at Ladder Bay up to the top of the island where there is the village, The Bottom. Before the 1940s the Ladder was the only way to get goods and people to the villages at the top of the island.

From the Bottom, take a taxi up the steep winding narrow road to the main town of Windwardside. Here there is a tourist office, restaurants, guest houses and dive shops.
