Description:

Bartica is a mining terminus town in the heart of the rain forest, 64 kms (40 miles) up the River Essequibo where it is joined by the Mazuruni river. It is becoming more widely known as a cruising destination and most services can be found here. However, other than for supplies there is little to keep yachts here.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Entering the river Essequibo on a rising tide in order to safely clear the shifting sand bar at the entrance, is recommended. Also beware of the strength of the tidal stream in the river as it can reach over 3.5 knots on the ebb. Entry can be made from either the Main Channel (east) or the Western Channel (with local knowledge). Night entry should be avoided because of unlit fishing obstructions placed across the marked channel.

Position:

06° 24.01’N, 58° 37.06’W (off the town)

Security

Following a number of attacks by armed criminal gangs at the start of the Millenium, Bartica has undergone a dramatic change in the past few years and cruisers report it is now a relatively safe place. Violent crime has been controlled and incidents are now rare. Normal security precautions as pertain to the Caribbean or Brazil should be adhered to.

Checking in at Bartica is simple and straightforward with customs above Church’s Chicken across the road from the Police station.

When anchoring in Bartica and if staying over night try to keep 200 yards off the shore between the market and the fuel quays.

Make sure your boat is well lit up so barges can clearly see you are anchored they have been known to come very close! There is an ATM nearby at Scotiabank.

Bartica has an excellent market open seven days a week and everyone is very helpful. Medical services are available …Dr.Sagala 654324. He treated me for an adverse reaction to a bite efficiently and very effectively.

Bartica is a good place to provision before moving onto to the other anchorages in the area
