Anchorages:

Apra Harbour

The “special anchorage” next to the seaplane ramp and tank farm in the NE corner of Apra Harbour (for clearance formalities) has good holding in 12 meters over sand.

The other places to anchor in Apra Harbour are off the Marianas Yacht Club (MYC) or inside the Harbour of Refuge.

The anchorage off the MYC is a little exposed, particularly in the northeast trade winds so be prepared for some swinging on anchor and a wet dinghy trip ashore.

Both the anchorage and three visitor moorings are managed by the Marianas Yacht Club. If using a mooring, check its security as they are subject to chafe. To arrange a mooring contact the MYC  – 1st Rear Commodore of Docks and Harbors at [email protected].

The first day is free and thereafter it’s US7$/day.

See Marianas Yacht Club’s Notes for Visitors for more info.

Harbour of Refuge

Because of the high frequency of typhoons, arrangements have been made in Apra Harbour for small boats seeking shelter during a typhoon. The Harbour of Refuge is located in Piti Channel, which can be reached by boats with a maximum draft of 2.5 meters (8 ft). The area is reputed to be well sheltered in any kind of winds but has no facilities other than water.  It is administered by the Commercial Division, downstairs at the Port Authority.  Costs are based on LOA and should be about US$10/day for a 40ft yacht.  Book in early if heavy weather or typhoons are forecast.  Move into the basin and temporarily secure fore and aft on the block marker buoys.  These are NOT mooring balls and you must secure your own lines and chains to the blocks by diving down.  The Port Authority will confirm the procedure on booking.

Agat Bay

Agat Marina located on the west coast of the island, south of Apra Harbour, is a good option if you want to berth at a pier.  No on-site manager (April 2023) so bookings must be made at the Commercial Office at the Port Authority.  Monthly fees are about US$240 for a 40ft slip.  No showers but water, power and plenty of knowledgeable sailors and access to mechanics.  New docks were built after a 2018 typhoon destroyed the place and are reported to be in good repair.

Cruisers report this is a good anchorage in N/NE/E winds, stay about 200 meters from shore.

There is no public transport in this area but it is possible to rent a car or get a lift with some of the liveaboards in the area.

Other Locations

Other anchorages at Cetti Bay and Merrizo Channel in southwest Guam are reported to be scenie with easy entry and good snorkelling.
