Easter Island - Money

Jul 20, 2024

Chilean peso of 100 centesimos.  US$ cash is widely accepted.

Foreigners are not allowed to change their Chilean pesos back into US$ but Chileans can.  It is generally advantageous to use local currency.

Banks only open from 09:00 till 13:00 Monday to Friday.  It is now possible to use both MasterCard and Visa plus local cards.  There are several ATMs on the Island.  Wiring money to the local banks can take weeks.

Cruisers have recommended trying the Kaimana Inn or Kaimana Restaurant and talking to the owner - Marcelo.  He will charge you through his card system and disburse the money in US$ or any other currency you may wish, if he has it available.
