Lying southwest of Home Island, West Island is the capital of Cocos (Keeling) Islands although it is the least populated of the islands (less than 150 people). It houses the Government Buildings and the airport, plus the Resource Centre which has the only ATM on the islands.
The only authorised anchorage for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is at Direction Island.
Visiting vessels are required to enter and depart the Cocos (Keeling) Islands anchorage at Direction Island only and cannot transit the lagoon to Home Island or. West Island
West Island provides great fishing and snorkelling. Kite surf during the trade wind season or explore the fascinating remnants of historical wars. There’s also the world’s only golf course set over an international runway.
