Sihanoukville, AKA Kampong Son is the coastal city and capital of the Preah Sihanouk Province. It is the location of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, the country's only deep-water port and is a growing Cambodian urban centre. The Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh is 200km north of the port, connected by a new highway which was completed in 2022.
Enter Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (Kampong Saom) from the west, keep Koh Dek Koule (Mirax Private Island) to starboard and beware the clearly marked drying rocks to port, just off the entrance. The deeper channel is well defined with lateral marks. Once safely inside, keep well clear of the busy port docks on the south.
It has become a popular beach tourist destination and attracts divers to Koh Tang, one of the Sihanoukville islands where the major battle to free the SS Mayagüez took place. Divers can see two shipwrecks 40 metres (130 ft) down. The main tourist beaches are Ochheuteal and Otres.
The journey to Phnom Penh which used to take up to four hours, now takes about 90 minutes on the new highway.
