Team South Pacific 2020, a group of organisations and individuals who assisted and supported cruising boats caught in Covid limbo and of which Noonsite was a part, has been recognised by the Ocean Cruising Club and awarded the OCC 2021 Award.

The OCC Award has two components one rewards members who contribute valuable services to the OCC and the other for anyone who contributes extraordinary service to the cruising community at large.

The 2021 OCC Award recognises Team South Pacific 2020: Juan Boschetti (Shelter Bay Marina – Panama),  Liz Back (Australian Honorary Consul – Panama), Cynthia Rasch (Denarau Marina Manager – Fiji), John and Lyn Martin (New Zealand), John Hembrow (Down Under Rally – Australia), Viki Moore (Island Cruising Club – New Zealand), and Sue Richards (Noonsite Editor).

OCC Vice Commodore Daria Blackwell said this team was instrumental in supporting yachts caught in COVID limbo across the Pacific in 2020. Each worked on specific aspects and all coordinated their efforts with the Ocean Cruising Club (Guy Chester and Fiona Jones).

“Without the various solutions achieved, cruisers would have faced serious issues. As it was the solutions – whilst not the most desirable outcomes – ensured yachts in Covid limbo had opportunities for safe haven for the southern cyclone season and could move to suitable ports,” she said.

Sue Richards, Editor of Noonsite comments, “It’s an honour to have been recognised by the OCC for what was a very intense time for everyone involved in Team South Pacific. Covid brought cruising organisations together to work towards the common goal of making sure cruisers from all over the world were not stranded when borders started to close. From Noonsite’s perspective, it was a pleasure working with such enthusiastic and dedicated cruisers who selflessley gave their time and energy to help yachts in trouble. I also must mention my incredible Assistant Editor Lynda Lim in New Zealand, who covered all the other work on Noonsite leaving me free to focus on Covid protocols when the Pandemic surprised us all. To Lynda and everyone else on Team South Pacific, a well deserved award!”

During the Pandemic the Ocean Cruising Club represented the cruising community as a whole, not just their members. They have time and time again demonstrated their committment to all cruising sailors. Find out how to become a member of the OCC here.
