Indonesia: Open for Tourism Despite Riots and Unrest
Following unrest and protests in Indonesia over the past week, the country’s Ministry of Tourism has issued a statement assuring all visitors that Indonesia remains open and welcoming. However, several countries including the USA and Australia have issued warnings for their citizens to avoid demonstration areas or large public gatherings.
The protests began on 25 August, with thousands demonstrating outside parliament against a housing allowances for MPs that was nearly 10 times the minimum wage in Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto had simultaneously implemented strict austerity measures, including cuts to education, health and public works.
The demonstrations spread across the country and turned increasingly violent on Friday August 29, after the death of a 21-year-old deliver driver in Jakarta. Since then least seven more have died in lashes between riot police and protesters, hundreds have been injured and public buildings have been burnt and looted.
