Immigration Procedure:

Your passport must have a validity of at least six months and at least one blank page for a visa.

For a list of countries that are not required to apply for a visa, see the webpage of the Immigration Services Department.

All visitors who wish to come for tourism purposes are advised to apply for Ordinary Visa (Single Entry Visa) for stays up to 90 days except for American nationals who must apply for Multiple Entry Visa even if they come for single entry. This visa has a 12-month maximum validity period. However, the Multiple Visa holder is not permitted to remain in the country for a period of twelve (12) months. At most every three months, they are required to leave the country.

All other nationals are required to obtain a visa in advance thru Tanzania Embassies or High Commissions abroad, or at the entry point on arrival (except nationalities under the Referral Visa Category).

An “e-visas” system has been implemented in Tanzania, allowing travelers to apply and have their visas approved online before departure. Go to the official Tanzania Immigration website.

The visa requirements, periods of stay granted and costs vary, depending on your nationality.

Be aware that Immigration officials in commercial ports are not familiar with handling foreign yachts and may not fully understand the Immigration rules that apply to yacht crew.

For Visa information, visit the Ministry of Home Affairs – Immigration Department.

Other Visa Information:

If you overstay the validity of your visa or permit you can be arrested, detained, and fined before being deported.

KILWA – Anchor near the port as this is manned by the navy and there are always people watching or on watch. Hoist your dinghy every night. Outboards (a.k.a. machines) are very nickable. The tour to the unesco world heritage site at Kilwa Island is very worth doing – go to the TAWA office and get a permit and they will arrange a guide.
