PRE-ARRIVAL

It is absolutely essential that permission to enter is obtained from Nauru Maritime and Port Authority (NMPA) before arriving at Nauru. Permission may not be given.

ARRIVAL FORMALITIES

The Port Captain monitors VHF Channel 16 (English is spoken) and will advise on the best procedure. If a large ship’s mooring is available, he may advise a yacht to tie up to it.

See the port of Aiwo for docking/anchoring information.

Entry formalities are completed ashore.

Note:  Due to continued presence of an Australian Offshore Detention Centre for Asylum Seekers, it is not advisable to visit the island unless absolutely necessary.

I worked on the island back in 1973. As pleasant as my stay was on the island there is not a lot to see as you can drive around the island in 20 minutes. There are the mined out phosphate fields and a few World War 11 war relics and that is it…..

“In 2008 Australia ended its policy of housing refugees on the island.” — that is no longer the case and the very unpopular and volatile policy of housing of refugees on Nauru has been reinstated. Recent news reports indicate that there have been several riots on the island, with numbers of detainees having escaped from custody. I recommend avoiding visiting Nauru for the forseeable future.
