Description:

This town lies on the southern bank of the Cacheu River, the entrance of which is just 20NM from the border with Senegal. The port is about 15NM from the entrance. It is the site of the earliest Portuguese settlement in Guinea-Bissau and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was the centre of the slave trade.
