East Timor (Timor Leste) - Facts

Sep 16, 2025
  • East Timor (Timor-Leste) has only recently shaken off its colonial past, joining the community of independent nations having been a Portugese colony until 1975 and under Indonesian sovereignty from 1976 - 1999.
  • In 1999, in a UN-supervised referendum, the people of East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia. On 20 May 2002, East Timor was internationally recognized as an independent state.
  • While not known as a cruising destination in its own right, westbound boats voyaging from Australia to Indonesia can make a stop in this small country which occupies half of the island of Timor.
  • From October through December it's whale watching season here as these incredible marine giants journey through the deep, nutrient-rich waters of the Ombai-Wetar Strait – one of Earth’s few deep-water migratory superhighways.
  • Reports are that basic repair facilities in Dili are good, but provisions tend to be more expensive than elsewhere due to most having to be imported. It is also reported that checking in procedures is very straightforward here.
