The Channel Islands are not part of the UK and therefore the health services on Jersey and Guernsey are not part of the NHS.

For UK visitors, some medical care is covered by a Reciprocal Health Agreement (RHA) with Jersey, but some treatment is not, and neither are pre-existing conditions. There is is no reciprocal health agreement between Guernsey and the British Government.

UK and Jersey Health Agreement

Medical insurance is strongly recommended.

Guernsey:

In Guernsey, primary care doctors, dentists and other health professionals, such as physiotherapists, are in private practice and all patients are required to pay for treatment. More details at https://www.gov.gg/healthcareforvisitors/travellers.

Jersey:

The Emergency Department is for emergency treatment only. It does not issue prescriptions for medication which is lost or forgotten. If you need urgent treatment in an emergency, you should come to the Emergency Department at the General Hospital. As in the UK an ambulance can be called by dialling 999. Emergency treatment given in the Emergency Department is free of charge, but treatment or care which is needed after that may not be. If you do not have travel insurance, you may need to pay for any treatment which is not classed as an emergency, including repatriation, if this is needed, which can cost approximately £5,000.

If you have a non-urgent medical issue, you’ll need to contact any local GP or the “out of hours” GP service [+44 (0) 1534 442000]. There will be a charge for this appointment which the individual GP practice can advise on.
