Bouvetoya - Clearance
Bouvetoya Clearance for Yachts
Since 1971, Bouvetoya (Bouvet Island) and its territorial waters have been protected, making it the world’s most remote nature reserve. All activity on the island is strictly regulated by the Norwegian Polar Institute. See their website for the most current information on the protection regulations for Bouvetoya.
Permission to land or stay on Bouvetoya is not officially required. However, in practice, a helicopter is typically required to access the island – which does require permission and a permit from the Norwegian Polar Institute.
The steep cliffs make landing by dinghy very difficult. There are limited places where it is possible to go ashore, and the ocean swell generally makes landing hazardous. The island is 93% covered by glaciers and rock cliffs. Some climbers did land on Bouvetoya in February 2012 and reached the top of the glacier on the island.
No visa is needed to visit this island.
