Typhoon Developed as it Crossed the South China Sea

Typhoon Kajiki developed into a typhoon as it travelled across the South China Sea on 23 August before crossing the coast and affecting Vietnam’s Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces which are about 350 kilometers (217 miles) south of the capital, Hanoi.

Residents and business owners along the coast boarded up windows and stacked sandbags outside homes, restaurants and hotels. Authorities shut down schools, two provincial airports, and organized mass evacuations from coastal provinces as Kajiki – the fifth typhoon to hit Vietnam this year – churned across the South China Sea towards the country.

Kajiki was packing sustained winds of more than 100mph (160km/h), as it traveled just to the south of Hainan, an island province in southern China. A red alert was issued for Hainan, which is the highest alert level in China’s warning system.

The typhoon was expected to bring more than 300mm (11.8in) of rainfall to parts of Hainan and Vietnam, causing severe flooding. Kajiki was then forecast to rapidly weaken as it travelled inland across Vietnam and Laos owing to the lack of warm seas required to fuel the storm.

Comparing Kajiki and Yagi

Vietnamese government officials had compared the typhoon to Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit the region last year, which devastated Vietnam’s north, killing about 300 people and causing widespread damage to infrastructure, factories and farmland. Yagi made landfall as the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, and while Kajiki is weaker, it has brought destructive winds and flooding.
