South Africa: Cruising Destination Update

Oct 11, 2026
The number of cruising boats visiting South Africa has increased substantially over the last few years and it has become a popular country to visit with circumnavigating cruisers and world rallies. The Ocean Sailing Association of Southern Africa (OSASA) is working hard on behalf of cruising sailors to keep bureaucracy to a minimum and advise visiting sailors to familiarise themselves with clearance and formalities requirements in advance, to avoid unnecessary delays.

Pre-Arrival Registration Mandatory

Yachts planning a South African landfall after crossing the Indian Ocean, or from anywhere offshore, must apply for authorisation for the boat and crew to enter South Africa at least seven (7) days in advance of arrival. This must be done through the Ocean Sailing Association of Southern Africa (OSASA) website. This applies to all yachts, whether foreign registered or local South African registered.

OSASA recommends completing all the pre-arrival documentation prior to departing for a South Africa Port of Entry.

Full details, including clearance, customs, immigration, fees and other rules and restrictions, can be found at South Africa Formalities on Noonsite.

Latest Updates and Guidance from OSASA

Arrive prepared for a busy season: The 2026 season appears to be starting early and some marinas are nearing capacity with advance bookings.

Book berths and technical work early: This is particularly important ahead of the South African Christmas holiday shutdown, when many businesses close from around 16 December.

Check current marina information: Durban marina pontoons have been notably strengthened. Mossel Bay has installed three refurbished swing mooring balls for anchoring outside the port at Santos beach.  Older reports may not reflect current conditions.

Understand registration and compliance requirements: Check OSASA guidance and confirm the requirements applicable to your yacht and planned movements.

Allow time for administrative matters: Some VAT claims remain unresolved, although OSASA is working to help move these forward.

Use local information sources: OSASA port pages and SABBEX’s service catalogue can help identify marina contacts and marine service providers.

Port of Entry Requirements:  Read OSASA’s information provided for each Port of Entry, which gives relevant contact details and pertinent docking, entry and departure requirements for each port.

Visas and Vaccinations:  Check your vaccination and Visa status as it is very important that you have the correct visa before you arrive in South Africa.
