New Publisher and Continued Expertise

Daniel and Kathrin Gerber have extensive experience cruising in northern waters and with local sailor Hans Jakob Valderhaug continuing his work, the Guide combines new energy with unmatched local expertise.

For sailors planning a voyage along Norway’s coastline, the Guide offers a complete, field-tested resource built on decades of firsthand experience. Published as a four-volume series, it covers the entire coast from the Swedish border to the Russian border, including Svalbard and Jan Mayen, with detailed harbour information, pilotage guidance, and essential local insight.

Accuracy and depth of information

A defining strength of the Norwegian Cruising Guide is the continued contribution of Hans Jakob Valderhaug, who for more than 40 years has cruised the Norwegian coast extensively. Since 2002, he and Eli Husum have systematically documented harbours, anchorages and coastal conditions, providing an exceptional level of accuracy and depth. Their ongoing fieldwork ensures that the Guide remains grounded in real, current cruising experience.

“We see the Guide as a working tool for sailors,” said Daniel Gerber. “Our aim is to preserve the depth and reliability built over decades, while continuing to update it through ongoing cruising and contributions from experienced sailors.”

The Guide’s heritage dates back to 1978, when Mark Brackenbury first created an English-language pilot for Norway. It was later expanded by John Armitage into a full national reference, and further developed and published for over two decades by Phyllis Nickel and John Harries. Contributions from Hans Jakob Valderhaug, Eli Husum and other experienced cruisers have shaped the Guide into a uniquely detailed and trusted resource.

Daniel and Kathrin Gerber have spent multiple seasons in northern Norway and Svalbard and winters spent living aboard in Arctic conditions. Their role ensures continuity of the Guide’s practical, experience-based approach while supporting its future development.

Comprehensive and free website

In addition to the books, the Norwegian Cruising Guide offers a comprehensive and freely accessible website. The site provides a wide range of practical information to help sailors prepare for cruising in Norway, along with direct links to selected retailers where the Guide can be purchased.

The current 8th edition is available in print (Amazon and bookstores) and as an interactive eBook on Apple and Google platforms. Work is underway on a fully updated 9th edition.
