Navigation: Imray Announces End to Chart Publishing Operations

End of an Era

Imray is one of the leading publishers of nautical information for leisure sailors.  The company was formed in 1904 when three chart publishing firms merged. It is still owned and run by descendants of the original founding companies of Imray which have a long and prestigious history dating back to the mid-1700s, when the hubbub of merchant ships filled the London docklands

In announcing the decision to phase out chart publishing and refocus their activity, Imray said the gradual conclusion of its chart publishing operations marked the end of an era and was a decision that had not been taken lightly.

Focus on Books and Digital Products

Imray will continue with a focus on supporting the maritime world through its comprehensive pilot book and cruising guide titles, together with the popular ‘Explore with Imray’ digital product.

These resources will continue to offer sailors and adventurers a guiding hand and vital, verified information for coastal and offshore navigation.

Charts will continue to be printed and supported by Imray Notices to Mariners through the 2025 season. After that point, Imray will no longer publish new editions.

The long lead time offers an important opportunity to equip leisure and coded vessels with Imray’s trusted charts in high quality paper format.  Imray is only one of two chart publishers with Maritime and Coastguard Agency recognition, the other being the UKHO. With price increases for official government charts applicable from January 2025, this is an ideal time to stock up with the more cost-effective Imray charts, tailored to leisure sailors. Imray’s legacy of nautical innovation and knowledge-sharing has been central to its mission since the mid-1700s, when its founders served merchant ships from the City of London, delivering the highest quality navigational resources possible.
