Sourcing Essential Parts While Long-Distance Cruising

For cruising sailors in remote locations, it can be a major challenge trying to obtain essential yacht parts from retailers thousands of miles away. But wherever they are, a brand-new website from online rope and rigging specialists Jimmy Green Marine will make it a lot easier to get crucial replacements identified, sourced and sent out in good time.

Jimmy Green Marine was first established in 1981 and still operates out of the seaside village of Beer, in south-west England, despite the steady expansion of the company and the massive increase in their product range. Having started as a mail-order business, they were early pioneers of online, personalised custom-build rope and rigging. The new website builds on that legacy, with an enhanced Product Finder and an intuitive, reliable step-by-step Custom Build system to make sure the order details are exactly right.

Visitors to the website will see a comprehensive visual makeover, reflecting the company’s rebranding (the first in its history); and they will experience a system designed to be straightforwardly navigable even by those starting without a precise idea of what they need.

Quick Guide to Ordering Via the Website

Customers begin with the broad type of item they want. They are then steered towards a more precise specification to the point where they can use the Custom Build system to put together the exact order. The idea is to make it as clear and easy as possible to choose exactly the right product, even when starting with minimal knowledge, because sailors’ safety depends on precise equipment specification in a wide variety of boat systems, from standing and running rigging to anchoring and mooring.

To give an example:

A long-distance, liveaboard sailor is in Panama, preparing their boat for a trans-Pacific voyage, and needs a new main halyard. Let us say this sailor is far from an expert in rope types.

They visit the Jimmy Green website and on a laptop they see – just below the logo on the homepage – a Custom Build button. (On a mobile, they would go into the menu and select Custom Build.)

By selecting either of these, they go through to a series of pages to narrow the search:

  • ‘Do you require a rope, chain, wire or webbing product?’;

  • ‘Is this rope for sail control, mast shape control, mooring, anchoring, deck safety or towing?’;

  • ‘Will your rope be used as a halyard, sheet, control line, or as a continuous control line?’;
  • and ‘Do you require cruising or racing performance, or is this rope for a dinghy?’

They arrive at the page where they can click on View Products under the Cruising Halyards sub-heading.

After clicking View Products, they will see a list of cruising halyard rope types and diameters.

(If the customer is still a little unsure about what they want, or about some of the terms they see on the page, they can scroll down on the Cruising Halyards page to get plenty of technical detail about the various rope types displayed, and there is a wealth of information in the Knowledge Centre, which will show on the right when they are on the Halyard drop-down menu.)

Continuing with our example: the customer, having read about the degree of stretch and UV resistance of various rope types, and using this information to decide that a 100% polyester, braid-on-braid halyard would work perfectly well for them, selects Liros 12mm Braid on Braid EVO and enters the Custom Build section proper.

The Step by Step Custom Build system is the other comprehensively redesigned part of the product-selection process. The customer clicks Start Your Build and chooses, from a range of illustrations, the fittings and types of splicing they want on the rope, as well as its colour and length. With the options clearly displayed in images, there is a lot less chance they will go wrong with the details. They click how many ropes they want and add the order to the basket.

What About Cost?

The website automatically removes VAT from all products if the customer is logged in to their account with a shipping address outside the UK. (Later on, the shipping courier will contact them to pay any taxes or duties, once the shipment arrives at Customs in the destination country.)

The shipping cost will often be instantly calculated by the website; but for some larger, heavier orders, and for more remote locations, Quote Required will show at checkout. If an order is completed with this shipping status, Jimmy Green Marine will work out the most efficient, best-value way to get the order to the customer and let them know the cost. In that scenario, customers typically receive a card-payment link by email to settle shipping charges.

Where Do We Deliver To?

Jimmy Green Marine cannot promise they will get an order to any location, but they regularly ship to seriously out-of-the-way places, from the Arctic Circle to the remotest corners of the Pacific Ocean.

For large orders, such as a pallet of anchor chain, a variety of shipping companies can be contacted to get a quote. Most smaller orders will be shipped by DHL, though customers can ask for a different courier if they like.

Can You Talk To A Person?

Customers can also contact Jimmy Green Marine for product information and guidance. As well as the wealth of information on the website, there is plenty of technical knowledge among the staff. Customers can email or phone, and WhatsApp video calls can be arranged as well.

The vital thing is that exactly the right product is selected. Whether the appropriate specification is identified through direct contact with the company or through the website, the priority is always that the customer receives, in good time, products that will look after them reliably in safety-critical situations.

That has always been the focus of Jimmy Green Marine, through all its 45-year history: personalised problem solving and a deep understanding of sailors’ needs. By combining that service with a global range and a highly evolved, highly intuitive website, they offer a valuable tool to world-cruising liveaboards in need of essential equipment.
