Fiji: Biosecurity lifts Ban on Poultry Imports from New Zealand

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has lifted its December 10, 2024, suspension on personal poultry imports from New Zealand, which was imposed over concerns about the spread of avian influenza from that country.

The lifting of the ban follows confirmation from the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (NZMPI) that the country is now free from the high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H7N6 strain that was detected in December 2024 at a single commercial egg farm in Otago on the South Island.

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) states in a public notice that the resumption of trade of poultry products from New Zealand under personal allowance can now commence.

All poultry products are now allowed to be imported to Fiji according to the BAF notice.  There is a personal allowance of 10kg per person with a supermarket receipt.  The poultry products must be in a commercially prepared pack that shows the product originated from and was and purchased in New Zealand.

The personal importation of poultry products in commercially prepared packs is allowed with a maximum amount of up to 50Kg per person provided there is a BAF import permit and import conditions are met.

BAF added that all commercial importation of poultry products must have a BAF import permit and meet the required conditions.

Welcome News for Cruisers

In May, Viki Moore, managing director of the yacht cruising rally company, Island Cruising, expressed frustration over BAF’s application of the policy, citing reports that officials were confiscating chicken imports from sailors arriving in Fiji while allowing others to keep theirs. She welcomed the news that authorities have lifted the ban.

“Sailors from New Zealand and Australia on the Pacific Rally are well aware of the biosecurity risks that pests can bring to affect our isolated island nations,” she said.

“We look forward to working with BAF to ensure that the current and correct regulations are distributed to visiting sailors and that the inwards biosecurity clearance is consistent across all ports of entry into Fiji.”
