Updated August 17 – NHC Hurricane Erin Advisory
Hurricane Erin is forecast to pass to the east of the Turks and Caicos islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Sunday night August 17 and into Monday August 18, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Squalls with wind gusts to tropical storm force could occur over portions of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico across the southeast and central Bahamas from Sunday night through to Tuesday next week.
Swells generated by Erin will continue to affect parts of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands for the next couple of days, the NHC said. These swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda, the east coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada during the early and middle portions of the coming week.

Erin Should Curve Northward
Forecasters expected Erin’s path to curve northward, with the hurricane likely passing near the northern Leewards – which stretch from the Virgin Islands to Guadeloupe and include St. Martin, St. Barts and other islands – on Saturday August 16.
Officials have issued tropical storm watches for several islands, alerting people of the possibility of winds ranging between 39 mph and 73 mph.
Erin formed as a tropical storm on Monday August 11, off Cabo Verde, which lies a few hundred miles off Africa’s western coast. It is the fifth named storm and the first named hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which started on June 1 and runs through until November 30.

St. Kitts and Nevis on Alert
The St. Kitts and Nevis National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the St. Kitts Meteorological Services confirmed that Tropical Storm Erin had strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, saying “The formation of a hurricane in such proximity to the Federation serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictable and dynamic nature of weather systems during the peak of the hurricane season. Current forecasts indicate that the core of Hurricane Erin is expected to pass near or north of the Leeward Islands on Saturday. “
Storm Watch for Other Islands
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued storm watches and warnings for
- Anguilla
- St. Martin and St. Barthelemy
- Saba and St. Eustatius
- Sint Maarten
The NHC also warned that islands elsewhere in the northern Leeward Islands, including the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, as well as the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas should monitor the progress of Erin.
