Fiji: Sea Mercy Responds to Cyclone Yasa

As with Cyclone Winston in 2016, Sea Mercy’s fleet of volunteer vessels, crews and disaster response leadership team in Fiji have been assisting the NDMO with emergency aid and medical team deliveries to the devastated remote island communities.

Since 2012, Sea Mercy has played a critical role in the meeting the needs on these remote islands and often were the first to respond and arrive with aid on these ‘at risk’ remote islands.

Volunteer vessels of Sea Mercy’s Second Response Team sailed from Port Denarau Marina early this morning to follow up on the work done by the first Sea Mercy team over Christmas and into the New Year.

Not only are they carrying additional donated aid supplies, they will also be conducting assessments to provide vital information in support of both Government and Non Government recovery initiatives.

Despite the challenges caused by two further cyclones hitting Fiji since TC Yasa, over a dozen volunteer vessels have now joined the Response Fleet, the majority of these small cruising boats.

SV Olena, one of the First Response Vessels, has put together this video offering a glimpse into life as a Sea Mercy Disaster Response Volunteer. It runs for approx. 12 minutes but shows in detail the devastation that the cyclones have wreaked in Fiji and how small communities are coping in the aftermath, with help from Sea Mercy.
