Hurricane Imelda, the ninth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, has weakened into a post-tropical storm over the central Atlantic Ocean, after lashing Bermuda as a Category 2 hurricane with heavy rain and powerful winds.

In an advisory notice, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that hurricane-force winds were recorded on Bermuda, but there were no immediate reports of damage from the gusts or heavy rainfall that had been expected to bring possible flash flooding and damaging waves.
A hurricane warning was dropped early Thursday October 2, but a tropical storm warning remained in effect for the islands, which sit about 600 miles east of the U.S. East Coast.
Government officials from Bermuda have reported major power outages and downed trees but no injuries or fatalities.
Before hitting Bermuda, Imelda battered the northern Caribbean, bringing widespread flooding in eastern Cuba and in Haiti.

Dangerous Surf and Swell for USA’s East Coast
Imelda came hot on the heels of Hurricane Humberto, which rapidly intensified to a major Category 5 hurricane over the Atlantic on Saturday September 27, but did not make landfall.
Swells generated by Imelda and Hurricane Humberto, the remnants of which are now farther out in the Atlantic, are spreading to much of the U.S. East Coast.
“These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,”NHC forecasters said.
Media outlets have reported that six unoccupied homes were swept into the Atlantic Ocean along North Carolina’s Outer Banks as powerful waves generated by Humberto hit the area.
