Three Tropical Depressions in the Northwest Pacific

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Typhoon Ragasa is one of three storms that formed in quick succession in the northwest Pacific in the past few days.

While Typhoon Mitag was relatively weak in strength and Typhoon Neoguri was moving towards the eastern coast of Japan and then out to sea, Typhoon Ragasa was expected to become one of the strongest typhoons in the region so far this year.

“It’s projected path could see it impact areas stretching from northern parts of the Philippines, to southern parts of Taiwan and China as well as Hong Kong,” the KMA said.

High Seas and Swells

The Hong Kong Observatory was also predicting Typhoon Ragasa to be the strongest typhoon in the northwest Pacific so far this year bringing severe weather to Hong Kong and parts of China latest this week.  The Observatory was expecting maximum sustained winds of 220km/h near the centre of the storm by Tuesday September 23 with very high seas and swells.

“Under the influence of a significant storm surge, the sea level over coastal areas may be similar to that of Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018,” said a statement from forecasters at the Hong Kong Observatory.

Typhoon Ragasa is continuing to intensify as it moves across the Luzon Strait between the northern Philippines and Taiwan and into the northern part of the South China Sea.

Hong Kong Airport May Close

The Hong Kong Airport Authority was considering closing the airport’s terminals from 6pm Tuesday September 23 to 6am Thursday September 25 due to the “serious threat” posed by Typhoon Ragasa.
