Well-Preserved Medieval Town

Monemvasia, a breath-taking town in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece, is widely considered one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in the country. Its unique combination of history, architecture and natural beauty has made it an essential part of Greece’s cultural heritage including the Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods.

Many of the members of the Monemvasia Residents and Owners Association (ROAM) are also active sailors and boat owners and as year-round residents of this historic city, they wanted to share some important local knowledge with Noonsite that may benefit anyone planning to visit the area while cruising in Greek waters.

Swimmers Outside the City Wall

When approaching the ancient city walls of Monemvasia from the south of the island, visiting yachts should exercise extreme caution. Swimming and free-diving are very popular near the city walls, and swimmers often venture well beyond the safe zone. Unfortunately, there are fatal accidents nearly every year involving boats and swimmers. All boaters are urged to navigate well outside any buoys (typically removed by the end of September) and maintain a safe distance of at least 250m from the shoreline.

Anchoring

Anchoring in the immediate vicinity of the old Kastro of Monemvasia is generally not recommended.

The seabed here is rocky, with numerous outcrops, making it easy for your anchor to get snagged. Additionally, there is an underwater cliff, which creates an unsafe environment for anchoring. Sea and wind conditions in this area can change rapidly and the anchorage is frequently exposed to swells and gusty winds, which can result in an uncomfortable, hazardous and rolly anchorage, particularly if weather worsens unexpectedly.

Local customs and community sentiment are against anchoring in this area as it disrupts the historic view of the Byzantine cityscape and detracts from the experience for both residents and visitors.

Dinghies should not approach the Portello entrance in the old city. The only safe location for a quick drop-off is directly in front of the metal stairs.

Water Quality

Water available for tank refilling in Monemvasia is of low quality, especially during the summer months, due to the absence of a desalination plant. It is extremely hard with high conductivity and mineral content, which can cause issues. Although the municipality is investing in water infrastructure, cruisers should not expect a significant improvement in quality in the near future.

Seasonal Notes

From October to the first half of December, many local businesses are closed for the season. However, this can be a wonderful time to visit for those seeking a quieter, more authentic experience of the city without the usual crowds.
