Lebanon : Profile
The latest travel advice should be consulted before travel to Lebanon as governments advise only essential travel be made to the country. The risk of unrest remains and civilians are at risk from terrorist incidents.
The summer of 2006 saw conflict between Israel and the Hizbollah forces and the destruction of much of Lebanon's infrastructure including Israeli bombardment of Beirut port and lighthouse. The political situation has since remained more volatile after a more stable period which had seen more cruising boats visiting Lebanon, encouraged by the construction of two new marinas in Beirut, or using the ATCL marina in Jounieh as a convenient base from which to explore the interior.
The Lebanese are a multi-faith, multi-ethnic people. Arabic is the official language, but English and French are also widely spoken. The two main religions are Islam and Christianity.
The pleasant climate is Lebanon's main attraction as the weather is mostly sunny. The summers are hot and dry, while the winters are cool and occasionally rainy.
