Situated on the west coast of the island, Ajaccio occupies a sheltered position at the foot of wooded hills. This is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France, and his association with the town are everywhere.
The harbour lies to the east of the town and is protected to the south by a peninsula crowned by a citadel.
