Description:

This port lies in the large bay of the Gulf of Patti, at the eastern end of the north coast of Sicily. It is about 15nm Southwest of Capo Milazzo. It is a useful jumping off point for visiting the Aeolian Islands.

Position:

38° 07.68’N, 15° 06.7’E (marina entrance)

    Just visited Portorosa 17 & 18 August 2018. Sadly, Portorosa has gone downhill since I last visited in 2013 – and I was a regular visitor in the years before that. The massive hotel nearby (which was once a Hilton) has now closed completely for the whole of 2018, and no one seems to know if or when it will reopen. As for “All facilities, fuel, chandlery, provisions, Post office, bank, pharmacy, cafe, yacht club, shops, bars and restaurants” – well, yes the chandlers is open, one of the two minimarkets is still open, there are a couple of restaurants that don’t seem to have any customers (bear in mind this is mid-August) – but I don’t see any signs of most of the other items. There was a truly superb restaurant on the right-hand side as you go in, but that is now overgrown and long since closed.

    There is still a superb and very friendly fuel jetty and Salvina at Asya (tel 3331623329 or [email protected]) is still as excellent as ever with hire cars and taxis. And there are two vibrant charter yacht companies, which are in the outer part of the marina, well away from the interior. But the biggest disappointment is that, essentially, according to the particularly nasty security man on duty, Portorosa is now a “private” marina, visitors are not welcome – and there were no identifiable visiting yachts that I could see there.

    Apart from fuel, and taxis (via Salvina) to the fuel jetty, I couldn’t recommend Portorosa marina anymore. I hope that changes. I remember it as a wonderful marina, built to look a bit like Venice, where you tied up to telegraph poles instead of tailed moorings, and it was a vibrant and busy place. Whilst the entrance part is still very good (which is owned by a different concession) the interior needs a substantial investment and a change of heart – back to the lovely way that the Italians always do greet visiting yachts.
