 Bundaberg - Profile

Location

This is the closest Port of Entry into Australia from New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

Position 24°51′0″S,152°21′0″E.

Clearance

Boats must proceed for clearance to Bundaberg Port Marina, where there are allocated berths for clearance. This marina is one nautical mile upstream from the river entrance, as it is no longer possible to clear in at Burnett Heads Marina at the river entrance.

If your hull is clean and of fibreglass, then clearance is fast and hassle-free.

There is a temporary anchorage area located near the Bundaberg Port Marina for after hours arrivals. Clearance will be conducted from 8am the following day.

Bundaberg Port Marina have a special offer 2013: For any boats making an advance reservation with the marina, quarantine fees will be credited. Contact the marina for full details of this offer.

Docking

Enter the Port via deepwater shipping channel into the "runway" of lead lights guiding you into the all weather access of the Port of Bundaberg - no problem day or night. In this stretch of the river, there are several marinas to choose from.

Burnett Heads Marina is immediately to port going in and Bundaberg Port Marina (see photo) is just around the first point to port, one mile up river.

Midtown Marinas is a further 7nm up the river, off the town itself.

Caution: Be advised that this river can rise significantly (3m+) in heavy rains. Choosing where to moor your boat is important and good guardinage should be considered if leaving the boat. Midtown Marina does seem to suffer significantly during periods of heavy flooding.

Returning to Australia after a 9 1/2 year circumnavigation we were not looking forward to the alleged complications and expense clearing in to Australia (Bundaberg). Nothing could have been further from the truth; we were attended to by very courteous and friendly officials, all done on board in about 1/2 hour and the total cost $330. Needing groceries the marina then called the manager at the supermarket in nearby Burnett Heads who picked us up in his van, took us to his shop and after finished shopping took us back to the boat via the local liquor store to pick up some beer, how is that for Aussie hospitality! Can thoroghly recommend Bundaberg as a port of entry.
