Biak - General Info

Description:

Biak is located on the southern shores of an island of the same name. It is the largest of the Schouten Islands and is about 300nm NW of Jayapura. It is part of the Indonesian province of Papua.

Biak town is the first official Port of Entry if approaching Indonesia from the East. This is a busy place as it forms a hub for transport both internationally (via the airport) and by sea to Papua and West Papua. It replaces Jayapura as the Port of Entry for this area. The clearance process for yachts has been greatly streamlined in 2024 and this is an efficient place to clear.

Cruiser Highlights:

It is an interesting and attractive place to visit and also provides good snorkelling sites and great beaches.

There is no place for overnight berthing for cruisers, but it does provide an anchorage. For provisioning, when tide and weather allow, it is possible to tie up to the main wharf for provisioning.

It is advisable to use an agent here to manage the clearance process.  Cruisers who have cleared into Indonesia here recommend Mr Igo (+62 82140321672)

Entrance Notes or Cautions:

The Port is protected by a reef, so it is important to check positions carefully in order to locate the approach.

Position: 01° 11.63’S, 136° 05.14’E (approach to main wharf)

    Reported by Massimo Vecchietti
    Good morning
Me and 3 other friends of mine with their boats (Patchouli II, Zahir, A Viagem and Sancta Anna) entered in Indonesia at BIAK in the first days of October.
Our agent was Raimond Lesmana who had provided us with the necessary documents, but we had great difficulty in completing the clearance procedures; the time needed was 4 days !!!
We must really thank Mr. IGO (+62 82140321672 also Wattsapp) who, in addition to having actively helped us with the various offices, also assisted us for everything else during the 4 days of stay at anchor in BIAK, also by procuring Pertamina DEXLITE fuel, which is not easy to obtain.
It is essential to have a local agent, to extricate yourself from the Indonesian bureaucracy and it is not enough to have one, even if efficient, far away.
Mr Igo, contacted in time, can also take care of VISAs at low cost !!
