Crinan Canal : Profile
The 9 mile long Crinan Canal runs from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the Sound of Jura. It provides a short cut between the Clyde Estuary and the west coast and its islands, avoiding the long trip round the Mull of Kintyre. It has 15 locks and 7 opening bridges. Boats transiting this canal can be subject to safety checks on gas, fuel and electrical installations. Third party insurance of 1 million pounds sterling is required. With a normal crew of 3 or 4, the journey can be completed in about 6 hours, if necessary, but with its wonderful scenery, it is worth lingering a little longer.
It is open seven days per week in peak season and Monday to Friday during the winter.
