Ogasawara Islands (Bonin Islands) - Docking

Chichijima port (Futami Ko) is home to both the fishing and tourist boat industries and is all concrete docks.  The local Coast Guard office does not stock Japanese charts for sale or duplication, so ensure you have charts with you for your landfall in the main island chain.

It appears that a resident local high-pressure system offers some insulation from typhoons that regularly visit the main island chain, however, the port is somewhat open to the west, so typhoon activity in that area may make the port uncomfortable and at times untenable.

The islands are serviced by a twice-weekly ferry from Tokyo, their only commercial passenger link.

Toilet facilities abound on the island, all being clean, lit and safe, with two public outdoor showers at the beaches, the closest being 10min walk from the main harbor, making a day ending swim and shower a nice precursor to dinner at one of the many great local restaurants and bars on the way back to the boat.

Fees: The cruiser who passed on this port information was not charged a docking fee for his stay, however, it was unclear if this was policy to offer short term visitors a free stay, or if the language barrier made it a difficult subject to approach.

YachtFlags.com provides high quality courtesy flags that are manufactured in durable Knitted Polyester fabric. Knitted so that the fabric itself does not deteriorate in the constant movement that marine flags are usually exposed to, and polyester so that the flag does not weaken in the strong UV-light usually found in the main sailing areas of the world.

    Noonsite Team says:

the Futami Ko dock is getting an extension, construction is underway. When we docked here on February 16th 2019 there was already about 50 feet. Once it is completed it will help to shield the dock from W-SW swells. Note that this extension is not yet charted, so if entering at night be careful (the end has two blinking yellow lights).
Water is available at the Futami dock, though access is restricted (the faucet is locked) and so you must ask for the key (An Ogasawara yacht club member who works at Flora helped us). There is a flat fee of 1000Yen for filling up, that is, unless you require a LOT of water.

For trash, you can find out which days to bring them out, or you can carry them to B.I.T.C store to bins next to the vending machines. They have bins for pet bottles, cans and burnable trash.
Internet is available at Heartrock cafe, otherwise you can register for a free FREESPOT account at the visitor’s center (seems unlimited with an account, for 180 days), or you can visit the internet center at the north-west end of town, south of the weather station (300yen per hour, no wifi, power available).
