Evripos Canal (Khalkis/Chalcis) - Docking
There is now a website for the marinas and ports on the whole of Evia, which now has an island-wide computer system.
It is also possible to buy a card giving access to the water and electricity pedestals located at various anchorages around the island.
The small harbour of Halkoutsi can accommodate yachts drawing no more than 1.5 meters (five ft). Oropos, the mainland ferry terminal for Eritrea, is the closest location with port police.
There is an anchorage south of the bridge under the fort with good holding in clay. Take the dinghy ashore on the jetty north of the bridge on the west side. NOTE: there is about a 0.7 meters (2.5 ft) tidal range here at springs.
There is now also a yacht harbour (Tel: 22210 63121) here with water and electricity. It is in the bight south of the bridge, close to the yacht club at Vourkari Cove. Med-moor with lazy lines. It is reported to be shallow here.
There are good shops ashore and water on the quay.
Notes:
- Cruisers report March 2024 that since 2022 there have been several break-ins at the waiting docks for the bridge. Be sure to lock your boat at all times when not on board and at night, and don’t leave any valuables on deck or in view down below.
- It has been reported that there are a large number of rats about in this area.
It is not so clear where to stop on the north side of the bridge to go through the formalities when passing through south. There are town docks on the east and west side of the channel before the beach and berthing for visitors is marked in red. This means no local boats should occupy these spaces. Berthing marked with no colour is for anybody. You may have to raft up. The dock on the island side has poles with water and electricity with smart-cards. These smart-cards are valid for ALL the harbours in Evia. It can be rough alongside the town docks because of the traffic and current flow.
Additional note: The direction of the buoyage changes here – the bridge itself is the port.

Hola, llevo navegando en Grecia 5 años, y varias veces y recientemente en Calkcis Evia puente de Chalkis, en la zona de amarre cerca dwl ayuntamiento, hubo varios robos, 2022 y 2023 y entradas en veleros con los ocuoantes en el interior. La mayoría de noche cuando duermen los propietarios, abren la puerta y de adentran en el barco y roban todo lo que está a la vista. La policía lo sabe pero no hace nada. Es importante avisar a los tates que cierren puertas no dejen objetos fuera. Si dispones de algún método disuasorio emplea.

Quick translation into English: This sailor reports that he has sailed 5 years on Greece and many times recently at the Chalkis bridge, Evia, at the berthing zone close to the port authority there have been various burglaries (2022 and 2023). They broke into the boats, mostly at night when the owners were sleeping, they opened the door and entered the boat stealing anything they could see. The police know this is happening but don’t do anything. It’s important to close your doors and don’t leave anything outside on deck or out on the chart table etc.
“Southbound traffic transits first.” This is not correct and hasn’t been for at least a decade. The initial direction is set by any large ships which wish to transit: they’re not going to keep them hanging about.
But there’s no ambiguity: all skippers are briefed beforehand, and then updated by radio before transit.

I just get the information that since the first of July the bridge price has doubled.
It is now 36 € for a 12-metre boat and at the weekend 75% higher!
If you are looking for anchorages in the Evia Channel DO NOT consider Nisos Stira’s anchorage on the East coast. The pilot and charts suggest 5-10m depth, we found this only with yards of the rocks. Everywhere else was 25 – 35m deep.
When transiting the bridge South to North it makes sense to anchor under the fort (10m Good Holding) and dinghy into the port police, but watch the tied through the gap.
Alternatively tie up on the quay, pay and then go and anchor. South bound traffic goes through the bridge first and boats on the quay get a lot of wash from fishing boats coming through.
Additionally, boats at anchor will be ready to go through the bridge before boats on the quay who have to wait for the traffic to pass before leaving the quay.
