 Turkey - Formalities


Officials are particular about the Turkish courtesy flag, which must be flown from the correct position between 0800 and sunset when cruising. The courtesy flag may be left up permanently when in port.

Yachts flying the ensign of the Republic of Cyprus will be refused entry to Turkish ports. This situation will, presumably, change if/when Turkey becomes a member of the European Union, but at present this rule is being enforced.

On Arrival

Any yacht coming from abroad must fly the Q flag and complete formalities at an official port of entry.

On entry, formalities are completed with Harbour Master, Health, Passport Police and Customs in this order. There seems to be some confusion as to whether it is possible to clear in and out on your own. Due to language difficulties, it may be easier to use an agent. Many marinas can act as an agent, alternatively, shop around, agents are not just on the waterfront, many travel agents act as yacht agents as well. Fees can vary greatly. The agent will provide the transit log and deal with formalities.

Each yacht must purchase a Transit Log, which is the travel document of the yacht during her stay in Turkey and states the yacht's master, owner, intended ports in Turkey and registered inventory. See Documents for further details.

The skipper's name should appear on the yachts' registration certificate or on some official proof of ownership. Generally, it is wise to ask for receipts for any payments.

Remaining in Turkey

Foreign-flagged yachts, on condition that they are sailed by their owners once every two years, can remain in Turkey up to five years without a requirement for any permission. For further details see Customs.

Transiting The Bosphorus or The Dardanelles

When within 5 miles of the entrance into either the Bosphorus or the Dardanelles, boats should contact Traffic Control for further instructions. Although this provision only applies to boats over 20 metres LOA, it is recommended that smaller boats also comply with it. Boats in possession of a transit log are no longer required to stop at Canakkale and may proceed through the Dardanelles without stopping. The regulations are similar for boats going through the Bosphorus, who may continue towards ports on the Turkish Black Sea coast without stopping.

Cruising The Black Sea

You can now expect the Turkish Coast Guard to be more rigorous in checking documents of yachts cruising in this area.

On Departure

Departure from Turkey must be from an official port of entry. If a yacht is leaving Turkish waters (even for a brief period) and planning to return within the time the transit log is valid, it must be surrendered on departure, and a new one obtained on re-entry.

When departing for foreign ports, yachts are required to complete full clearance procedures and surrender of the Transit Log with Harbour Master, Passport Police, and Customs, in that order.

Prior to clearing out it is recommended cruisers speak to the Harbour Master first. Double handed yachts (just 2 crew) have reported that they were not required to use an agent for clearing out, in particular in Bodrum. Agents charge approx. 85 Euros for this service.

Please note that Visas for individuals are multiple entry, but the Transit Log is not. If Turkey is left in an emergency, without having been able to clear out correctly, the completed Section V should be handed in to a Turkish consulate abroad within one month, otherwise the yacht cannot return.

It is recommended to avoid zigzagging between Turkish and Greek waters. With the current situation this is particularly important.

Both countries insist on arrival from abroad to be made only at an official port of entry.

USA-Turkey Diplomatic Notice October 2017 [Updated Jan 2018]

The original order that made it difficult for US citizens to obtain visas to Turkey has been retracted. The diplomatic issue has been resolved for the moment. This order prevented some US citizens from being able to apply for a visa through online services and some US citizens were refused entry on arrival.

As of 28 December 2017, this situation has resolved and full visa services have resumed. There have been no refused arrivals (regarding diplomatic issues) since this date.

As from 1 January 2015 passports must be valid for at least 60 days from the date of expiry of the traveller's visa, visa exemption period or residency permit to be able to enter the country. For example, a traveller with a visa expiry date of 20 May 2015, must hold a passport that is valid until at least 20 July 2015. Passports are also checked on departure to ensure they comply with this requirement.

Visitor Visas

It is no longer possible to get a visa on arrival in Turkey. Visitors must now obtain an e-visa online before travel.

The e-visa has increased to 20 USD per person, but is a multiple entry visa valid for 180 days from the date of issue.

The e-visa applies to 63 countries including UK and European passport holders. For a list of countries eligible to apply for an e-visa see the section "get information" on the web page.

Whilst e-visas are valid for 180 days, holders are only allowed to stay in Turkey for up to 90 days in ANY 180 day period. Multiple visits are allowed provided the total number of days does not exceed 90. All calculations should include both the entry and exit dates, no matter what time of day or night.

These rules bring Turkey in line with Schengen countries and the rules are being interpreted along the same lines. Prior to 2014 enforcement of these rules was somewhat lax and many people benefited from that. However, the rules are now being strictly enforced and fines for overstaying have been issued. Regular visitors should be careful when planning their dates as the 90 day in ANY 180 day period could span more than one visa.

Remember - whilst the visa is multiple entry, the boat's transit log is not. So checking your boat in and out multiple times may not be practical.

Foreigners who intend to stay in Turkey longer than the visa or visa exemption period, or in excess of ninety days, are obliged to obtain a residence permit (see information below).

Note: the residence permit will become invalid if not used for six months.

Online visa fees are charged in UK£ for the United Kingdom, € for EU/EEA countries, and US$ for most others. Visas on arrival can be paid in Pound, Euro, US dollar, or Turkish Lira.

Entry Requirements - Passport validity & space for visa stamp
You must hold a valid passport to enter Turkey. Your passport must be valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of entry into Turkey and have at least three months validity from the date you are exiting Turkey.

Officials will be placing a physical paper stamp AND rubber stamp into your passport. You should ensure that your passport has a fully blank page for a visa stamp.  If it does not you will be refused entry. They will not place the paper stamp over another country's visa or stamp.

Remember, this applies to both visitors on a visa, and also residents with an ikamet.  Foreign residents still have their passports stamped with 'in and out' visa stamps, (they just don't get a visa sticker).

Overstaying your Visa

Staying in Turkey beyond the date of your visa is taken seriously by the Turkish Authorities. If you overstay you will be fined upon departure. Fines vary according to the length of time you overstay. If you overstay and are fined, you must apply for your next visa at a Turkish Embassy or Consulate overseas before you travel. You may also be banned from re-entering Turkey for a period of time.

Residence Permits

A new policy is now planned, and short term residence permits will be granted for 2 years. Passports must be valid for 2 months beyond this period before a permit is issued.

The good news is that there is no longer a requirement for a Turkish bank account (but you do need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself).

It is a requirement to have health insurance (not required for applicants over age 65), and the authorities now want this to be Turkish health insurance, they are not accepting international health insurance that covers you in Turkey.

It is also a requirement to have a Turkish address (i.e. a marina contract). This does not however have to be an annual contract.

Important Note: If you are out of Turkey (on a resident permit) 120 days of the year (including time out for intermittent travel), then your resident permit will be cancelled. This ruling starts 1 April 2015 and is relevant for old, current, or new residence permits.

Residence Permits can now be applied for and extended online. This is a new system introduced in May 2015. The Turkish website for applications is at Find out more at this Noonsite news article.

An agent can smooth the way with applying for a Residence Permit, although of course there will be a fee involved. It is highly recommended that before applying for a residence permit that you contact an agent and ask questions. There is no charge for asking questions. It is advisable to take a native Turkish speaker with you to avoid any misunderstandings.

The cost of a residency permit was reduced to 55 Turkish lira (US$24) from 206 lira (US$98). Agencies charge approximately US$60 per person for obtaining a permit.

  • Passports must be stamped if leaving by other means than by yacht, as the police do not normally stamp passports of people entering by yacht and these stamps are necessary to leave the country overland or by air.
  • It is illegal to not carry some form of photographic ID in Turkey. It is therefore advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport with you at all times.

There are some regional differences in Customs formalities. In the past, some captains have been asked to produce a certificate of competence when clearing in, and if unable to do so the yacht was not allowed to leave port.

A detailed inventory must be completed and stamped by Customs. This form will be compared with a similar produced on exit from the country. Any differences must be supported by a purchase receipt or sales receipt (with customer details).

All types of firearms must be declared, and will be sealed on arrival by Customs. Also, diving tanks must be declared.

Antiques cannot be exported. If carpets are bought, Customs will require to see proof of purchase. Antique objects must be accompanied by a non-objection certificate issued by the Ministry of Culture.

Replacement Parts

Getting the customs duty waived on yacht equipment that has been ordered from abroad is a lengthy and frustrating procedure, so it might be easier to try and bring any equipment needed into Turkey as personal luggage or use an agent. Although the agent's fees may be very much higher that the value of the item.

Such items MUST be marked on the package "FOR YACHT IN TRANSIT". It has been reported that this is easier in Istanbul than some other ports. Since Turkey is now in a customs agreement with the European Union, imports from other parts of Europe may be easier in future. From outside the EU, it may still be difficult.

In such a case it is advisable to have a copy of the ship's papers as well as some form of proof that the yacht has been left temporarily in Turkey. Items brought in personally with a value over US$300 will be registered into one's passport. This will be cancelled when the entry is transferred to the transit log. Equipment couriered directly should be addressed to the marina, and the marina's advice should be sought in advance as to the correct procedure as well the best company to use.

It also helps to be near a major airport or seaport such as Antalya, Istanbul or Izmir.

A better solution might be to ask a local chandlery to order the parts for you, as the price then paid will probably be cheaper and involve much less hassle.

Leaving your yacht in Turkey

Yachts may be left in Turkey for 2 to 5 years (depending on the port) without incurring duty.

Special formalities must be completed if the yacht is to be left unattended in Turkey and the crew leave the country by other means. The forms are available from marina offices and must be stamped by Customs.

Yachts can be left for up to two years in bond at a boatyard or marina for maintenance and repair purposes. In this case marinas must make an application to the local Customs office.

A yacht laid up for the winter in a marina or boatyard that is used by the owner at least once every two years may remain in Turkey for up to five years without needing to obtain further permission. Extensions may be available to this five-year period. When the owner leaves Turkey the yacht must be placed in Customs Bond; however, to take a yacht out of bond it is no longer necessary to obtain a new transit log if it has not expired.

Hepatitis, polio and typhoid vaccinations are recommended.

There are good medical facilities in towns and cities.

A free interpretation service is now offered 7 days 24 hours for foreign persons calling the 112 emergency call  command centre. This service is also available to foreign persons calling up 184 SABÝM (the ministry of health communication centre), calls to all private and public hospitals under the Ministry of Health, provincial organization and administrative units of the central organization and foreign persons coming to these units.

In addition, this service is available to all foreign patients and tourists for health-related issues and includes translations of medical reports of foreign patients treated in the hospitals under Ministry of Health.

Although water is potable in most places, it is recommended that drinking water is purchased in bottles or other containers. Be careful what water you choose to fill your holding tanks – not all dock water may be potable.


Certificate of Competence

Whilst the Greek authorities (especially in the south) do ask for an international certificate of competence (ICC), the Turkish authorities do not seem too bothered. Cruisers have reported being told by the authorities, "If you are a foreign flagged vessel and your country does NOT require you to have a certificate of competency to operate a boat, we as Turkey cannot make you get one nor fine you".

Transit Logs

Each yacht must purchase a transit log at the first port of entry. The cost is not high, approx. 40 Euros. This is the travel document for the yacht during her stay in Turkey and states the yacht's master, owner, crew and intended ports in Turkey.

The Transit Log is considered a legal document and should be kept up as accurately as possible.

There used to be an inventory section on Page 1 of the transit log. However if an agent is used, cruisers report that they are no longer looking for a specific inventory list.

Foreign flagged yachts may cruise on the routes shown in their transit log and call and anchor at harbours along the route where there is no Customs office, for sightseeing purposes, on condition that there are no other restrictions.

The transit log is valid for one year (365 days) and is renewable several times. The boat needs to leave the country (for one day) at least once every five years. The transit log remains valid even if the yacht is laid up. If the owner leaves without the yacht, the transit log will still be valid on return provided that date is within the 365-day period.

The transit log is single entry, if you check out, you need to buy a new one at re-entry. The existing Transit Log must be cancelled and a new one obtained if there is a change of owner.

Any crew changes must be entered on the log and authorised by the Harbour Master at the port where the change takes place. This does not mean guests - joining and leaving in Turkey - just longer term crew.

The Transit Log can now be used as "proof of accommodation in Turkey" for every crew member listed on it, when applying for a Residence Permit.

There is a small fine if you are still in Turkey when your Transit Log expires.


Boat: Yachts may be required to show insurance documents when clearing into Turkey. Whether it is requested, appears to depend on the official. It is required by most marinas (minimum 3rd party).

Personal Health: Anyone in Turkey (women, children, men, yachtsmen/women and foreigners alike) require Turkish offered health insurance. This is state insurance at TL 480 per month. For anyone over 65 years of age there is private company insurance available. Even if you already have international health insurance you must still take on the Turkish insurance.


A great deal of confusion surrounds the regulations concerning restrictions imposed on foreign yachts cruising in Turkey, which are suspected of chartering. A change of crew, even if these are friends of the owner, is sometimes interpreted by some harbour Masters as being equivalent to the arrival of a charter party. However, regulations have been greatly eased in recent years and the ownership issue (i.e. the owner must be on board and Turkish law does not allow more than four co-owners) is no longer applied with such severity.

Each port of entry from Istanbul to Antalya interprets the law differently. Prices will differ from port to port. In previous years, the more favourable fees and procedures were in Fethiye.  However now that so few yachts come to Turkey, this may change.

Clearance Costs

Whilst there are no official fees for checking in, there are some costs involved. The expenses to check in to Turkey total approximately 100€ including Transit Log, Blue Card and agent's fee.

There are additional fees if entering at a cruise ship port.

Cruise Port Mooring Fee per hour:
- up to 15m is 35 TL;
- boats 15m - 24 m is 50 TL

The Transit Log costs 35€.

The Blue Card costs 25 TL. The fines for not getting a Blue Card are reported to be anywhere from 700€ to 5000€.

Yachts chartering can obtain a license which costs upwards of US$1500.

Other Fees

Agencies will charge between 35-100€ for checking-in.

An agent will charge approx. US$50 for obtaining a residence permit. The permit (or Blue Book as it is called) will cost around US$100 per person.

Lighthouse Fees by Directorate General of Coastal Safety of 1.2 USD/Net Ton for yachts over 101 Net Ton.

Health Office Duty Charges of 0.20 TL/Net Ton for yachts 51 Net Ton +

A navigation aids fee is payable by boats over 30 tons.

There is a charge of 40 to 50TL for stamping a yacht inventory form.

Overtime charges seem to vary from place to place, so if at all possible it is advisable to clear in and out during office hours on normal working days.

Visa fees are payable for some nationalities, approx. 25 Euros.

Discharge of Waste - Regulations now apply to all Turkish coastline.
The discharge of both toilet waste and grey water is prohibited even if more than 3 miles from the shore.

The regulations require vessels cruising in the area to have both black and gray water tanks. This regulation is not limited to larger boats or boats with over a given number of crew/passengers.

Since the start of 2015, all yachts must have a 'Blue card' - a smart card obtainable from marinas or from Harbour Masters offices, that records boat and crew details. If you don't have one, you may face a hefty fine. The penalty for boat owners with no blue card is said to be TL 10.400 (USD 5200).

The Blue Card should be purchased upon check-in to Turkey. Approximate cost 25 TL .It doesn't expire.

From the yacht's details programmed into the "Blue Card" (i.e. size of waste bin and capacity of holding tank), using a scale based on the number of persons aboard relative to the size of the holding tank, the local authorities work out how often you are "obliged" to have your tank emptied. Fines are levied for not pumping out and it is advisable to have your Blue Card scanned every 2 weeks. See this Cruisers Report July 2016 for more details.

Past reports indicate that the Blue Card programme is being heavily enforced in the popular SE bays (e.g. Gocek, Fethiye), Istanbul area and Sea of Marmara. The coastguard are patrolling asking yachts to present their cards. It is therefore advisable to secure a Blue Card on arrival from the marina or port police office, and behave with common sense and sensitivity to Turkey's environmental concerns.

Note that actual pump-out points are few and far between and those that are available often require you to have the necessary hose/equipment to proceed with a pump out! Pump outs during the winter are greatly restricted.


If one of the owners (a yacht may have up to four co-owners) is not on board, it is up to the skipper to convince the authorities that the yacht is not chartering.

A foreign yacht used for commercial purposes on entering Turkey will receive a Transit Log just to visit one Turkish port and will have to sail from there to a foreign port only. A charter yacht intending to be based in Turkey may obtain a Charter License which will cost around US$1,500 (or more), which will permit the yacht to be subject for one year to the same regulations as Turkish flagged yachts.

Another option is for a foreign yacht to obtain a Turkish flag by being registered on the "Second Register", regardless of whether the yacht in question has been subject to Turkish VAT and Customs Taxes. An initial fee of US$10,000 is levied, followed by an annual fee of US$ 0.50 per Registered Tonnage.

Commercial, Fishing and Charter Boats (vessels over 15m)

From 1st Jan 2010 all such vessels must be equipped with an AIS system.

Prohibited Areas

Prohibited areas for yachts are: no anchoring at the entrance and exit of the Dardanelles (Canakkale Bogazi, especially Gokceada and Bozcaada, region of Kumkale, Mehmetcik, Burnu, Ani, Korfezi); the zone north of the Bosporus, Gulf of Izmir, isles of Uzin and Hekim; the Bay of Karaagac; Oludeniz, Fethiye; parts of the ports of Mersin and Iskenderun; the submarine base in the inner port of Bartin Liman.

Entering some historical areas (like Hamam Bay) is prohibited.

Additional Restrictions in the Gocek Dalaman Area
- It is planned this area will be designated a sea park (as similar ones in Italy).
- Discharge of black and grey water is forbidden in this area (therefore a holding tank for all waste water is essential).
- Other than in the marinas, mooring is only permitted to fixed points (bouys, rock rings etc).
- Anchoring is prohibited to protect the ecological underwater system. Only dedicated mooring points can be used.
- Maximum mooring period for boats in Gocek-Dalaman Coves is limited to 11 days.
- Speed limit is maximum 6 knots.
- Disturbing music is prohibited.
- Cooking on deck is prohibited.
- Diving in some coves is also prohibited.

Taking archaeological souvenirs can lead to confiscation of the yacht.

Skin diving is permitted everywhere, but diving with tanks is restricted. Originally divers must have registered with a Turkish diving club and be accompanied by a Turkish instructor when diving, but now these restrictions have been lifted, although it may be sometime before all authorities are aware of this.

The only areas prohibited from diving are military zones, those conducting scientific research and areas under protection.

Fishing is permitted for sport in certain areas, but there is a minimum size for fish caught and also the amount per person is controlled.

Local Customs

Turkey is largely a Muslim country and Islamic law must be respected. Sensitivity regarding standards of dress should be observed.  Women should dress conservatively and men must not wear shorts or go shirtless in public.

During the month of Ramazan (Ramadan), one should not eat, drink or smoke in public. Ramazan is  set according to the cycles of the moon. Tentative dates for this year, 2014, are 27 June – 28 July. This holy month of fasting ends with Bayram, a 3 day holiday, 28 – 30 July. Many Turks fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramazan. Restaurants are less busy at lunch, and there’s even less Turkish tea. If you’re in Turkey during Ramazan, it’s polite to refrain from eating and drinking in public during daylight hours. Rather, do it inside a restaurant, tea house, cafe or other private or semi-private area.

Animals require a recent health certificate from the country of origin. A rabies vaccination certificate must show that the animal received the vaccination between 15 days and six months before arrival in Turkey.

NOTE : If you have an official certificate, you may bring one cat, one dog and 10 fish into the country.

14 June 2018. Anchored in Western side of Ucagiz Limani in the bay about 5 minutes dingy ride from the main harbour (36° 11.625' N, 029° 50.589' E) Went ashore to dinner at Hassan (good restaurant). Upon returning to the yacht +/-2200 found that the boat had been broke into. Two forward hatches were forced open breaking the Lewmar locking mechanisms. For reasons unknown nothing was taken, perhaps they were disturbed. We had been advised by another British boat the day before that they thought their yacht had been entered when they were in this area but surprisingly to them nothing of value had been taken. As a precaution we had placed all items of value out of sight. Trying to make a report to the local Coast guard but there is a general lack of interest. Sad to say this is a yacht break-in risk area!

In general, in the Marmaris area and along the coast, "things" are quiet. It's not because it's winter but as a result of yachtsmen/women leaving Turkey over the past few years. In brief, marinas raised mooring and other fees, the government raised the prices of the transit log and visas/resident permits, and local chandleries/industrial areas have also raised their prices.

Keep in mind that some marinas have more vacant slips than they do have occupied slips. At the moment, Yat Marina in Marmaris Bay does have less slips since boat owners have an annual habit of leaving the area (and sailing): The owners leave for home (UK, Europe, Russia and Scandinavia) about the end of October, to return the end of April (7-8 months). Netsel Marina has moved any remaining boats to 2 pontoons only. Netsel says they can accommodate 1,000 boats, but there's too many slips unoccupied, especially the larger yacht moorings and on the hard standing places.

On the hard standing, the fee is 30% more than the mooring fee. The first 10 days on hard standing are complimentary but IF one wants more time, those ten days are added on to the additional days so you don't actually have the first 10 days complimentary.

The Blue card is still in effect. It is to be purchased upon check-in to Turkey. It doesn't expire. There is a fee for the card. Since fees rise constantly here (one reason why people leave!), the most recent price I could find was 25 TL.

Anyone here (women, children, men, yachtsmen/women and foreigners alike) require Turkish offered health insurance. This is calculated: single person, couple, entire family TL 480 per month. If anyone is over 65 years of age there is private company insurance available. Under 65 there is the state insurance at 480 Tl per month. Even if yachtsmen/women, et al have international health insurance they must still take on the Turkish insurance. This expenditure is another reason people leave Turkey.

I have just completed 3 months cruising in Turkey, having bought my boat there in December.

The Antalya agent who set up my transit log charged me €400 (yes Euro, not Lira) because "boat had new owner".

When I left Datca yesterday, the agent there claimed there was a stamp missing on the paper work, so I must pay a penalty of €200 plus his fees. When I asked for a receipt I was told it would take time and I would have to stay longer.

So €625 in fees.

At the same time as going though exit prodedures, the local harbour police started hassling me, forcing me to buy a new Turkish flag (old one was ok but had a minor fray). I suspect in cahoots with the agent so I didn't challenge the "penalty".

If this expense wasn't a scam, then the fees are shocking.

By comparison, I entered Greece in Symi, did all clearances myself in less than an hour, total costs €45, and really helpful and friendly immigration staff and harbour police.

The Coast Guard issued (us with) a fine for the absence of the Blue Card. The Blue Card was not issued by our agent who did our CHECK-IN and TRANSIT LOG in Istanbul for $500.

In 2016 in June we stayed for 2 nights at a cost of 278TL.
In 2017 in June for 2 nights the price has gone up to 448TL, an increase of about 60%.
It seems that more the Turkish economy suffers the higher the prices are!

Wow, Amaroo, that's awful. We feel fortunate because we similarly left our boat in a Setur marina (Kas) in Turkey in the winter of 2015/2016 and didn't pump out between October and April and didn't have a problem when we did (but we did our last and first pumpouts at the marina, which perhaps made the difference. Also, we were never boarded by the coast guard as you were. We sailed up and down the Aegean, Lycian and Turquoise coasts of Turkey in the spring of 2016, pumping out every few weeks, but probably not more often that 3-4 and had no problems. So sorry for your bad luck and that astronomical fine. Ugh!

Boat owners are responsible for maintaining the necessary official paperwork for any country they visit. Particularly important when leaving the boat behind in a country whilst you travel abroad is document renewal should the paperwork expire while you are out of the country. For instance, every 5 years a foreign flagged vessel must check out of Turkish waters and then check back in if they wish to stay in Turkey. Boat owners also have to use the Blue card at least once a year or be fined. Note too that the transit log expires annually and cannot be renewed unless the blue card has been used. A number of liveaboards in Turkey have offered the following advice:
- If a boat does not have a holding tank a friendly marina will just run the blue card through the system and no problems (this is not widely known...). Some people take a bag of rubbish and show it to the marina management.
- Using an agent can help a great deal with keeping your Turkish paperwork in order, up to date and avoiding fines. The key in Turkey is not letting your paperwork expire.
- If someone has an agent (to check in and out of Turkey, renew all documentation from the boat owner), then the agent takes care of this blue card thing.

We pumped out in Antalya on arrival last year, September, and left the marina, and Turkey, the next day for 7 months overseas. Our vessel was on the hardstand the entire time we were away. When we returned to Antalya, we anti-fouled and launched the boat, sailing from Antalya to the Datca area in June.

We have exceedingly large tanks that can hold for several weeks before needing to pump out. We proceeded to Datca to pump out but they did not have the correct fittings at their facility to perform a pumpout. We were told to come back in a week and it should be ok to pump out then. We still had enough room in tanks, approximately 85% full since leaving Antalya in June. We were grateful that we had large tanks. Amazingly, in all the travels we have had in Turkey, it is very rare to see any sizable vessel pumping out on shore anywhere.

The day before we were due to return to Datca to pump out, or attempt to pump out, the Coast Guard visited the anchorage, 10 NM east of Datca, and looked at our paperwork. As we had not pumped out since September, it appears they felt we must have pumped out somewhere other than at a designated facility. They did not take into account the boat was unattended on the hardstand in Antalya for 7 months. We subsequently acquired a letter from Setur Marina Antalya confirming this but Coast Guard officials were not interested in seeing the letter or hearing anything about it. We were told that it is deemed that the usage per person per day for waste water is 30 litres. That means they considered that we have 60 liters per day going into our tanks. That is absurd. The Coast Guard informed us that we should be pumping out EVERY 2 WEEKS!

In Datca we were told that we would not be authorized to leave Turkey without paying the fine. We paid to the tax office 9,500.25 TL!! Paying within 30 days gave us a 25% discount on the fine which was 12,267.00 TL ($4,100.00 USD)!!

We enquired about appealing the decision but were told by all we spoke to that no-one has ever been successful in appealing, regardless of the facts or proof of any kind that can prove nothing was done wrong. We enquired at Customs, Datca, regarding the appeals process and they would not inform us where to start apart from saying "Go see your agent". Our agent, the biggest in Datca, said it was a waste of time and money to even try.

We do not understand the paperwork as it is in Turkish. I refused to sign as I did not know the contents. The paperwork was written on the deck of a gulet anchored in the same bay on 11th July at 1430 hrs, which, according to the paperwork they presented was when the offense occurred, but we are not sure. The officials were told our tanks were just over just over 85% full at that time and I offered to show them but they were not interested. I informed the officials that we tried to pump out in Datca and was informed by the official that "It is not our problem!" We have subsequently found out that the Datca pump out facility has been inoperative for a long time. Therefore, perhaps, virtually all the boats in Datca may be contravening the laws.

This comment from a long-term liveaboard/cruiser based in Marmaris.

Where have all the cruising boats wintering in Turkey gone?

In the past 8 years at least, during autumn, winter, and spring, the marinas in Marmaris have been full with 45-60 yachtsmen/women staying in Marmaris full time. This population, of course, is great for social activities and an interesting blend of personalities and cultures in the yachting community.

This year however, the yachting community population is so low that it’s a struggle to get 8-10 persons together for any kind of activity or get-together. I've never seen so few people in Marmaris Bay!

More yachts appear to be berthing for the winter in Finike, which is much further south of the usual and popular cruising area of this part Turkey, and many are leaving for a winter in Greece, Malta, Crete and other Mediterranean ports.

From emails I have received and face-to-face conversations with departing cruisers, possible reasons for this exodus may be:
1) An increase in marina charges (mooring, lift and launch, electricity, etc.) not only in Marmaris Bay but in Turkey in general.
2) A fear of political instability (although this hasn't had an effect on Marmaris and other northern/western ports and communities).
3) Changes in residence permits (1 year vs 5 years, application procedures etc.), plus local and governmental health insurance fees rising and their non-recognition of international health care companies.

About the only positive thing about Turkey reported to me by foreign cruisers is the favourable exchange rate of the GBP and USD (1 USD at today's rate is 2.98 Turkish Lira and 1 GBP over 4 Turkish Lira).

I know it is a 2 years old comment but I wanted to reply. You need to change the list in transit log if you are sailing with your guests. They are all considered as crew. I went sailing on US flagged boat with my family (we are all owners of the boat.) and the coast guard said we have to change the transit log. Turkish owners of US flagged boats don't do that because it is usually not checked. We were lucky because the coast guard personnel was understanding but I am sure there is a fine if the people on board are different from the transit log.

Transit Log: Regardless of what an agent tells you, you ONLY have to amend your transit log when you add or subtract CREW or CAPTAIN. If you have GUESTS coming, their names are NOT required to be on the transit log. If you are in Marmaris and using Ankar Agency for help, she will tell you differently. But she is wrong. Read the rules in English associated with the transit log. It never mentions the word "guests." If this was required, every Turkish owner of an American flagged boat would be updating his transit log every weekend. And they are NOT! So do not be fooled into doing so. The agents that tell you this are just trying to line their pockets with your money.

On my way from Finike to Fethiye my alternator and/or my regulator stopped working and in Fethiye I was recommended an English engineer for repairs. When I phoned him he said, I will send my electrical engineer, but in fact sent someone from another company, who came and removed my alternator and regulator.

Next day he returned saying that they had bought a new one as the other would cost nearly as much to repair. Stupidly - I must have been mesmerised - when he said 'you don't want that old one?', I said no. That's not like me!

Next day I found that the new alternator was very inefficient and as I had since been told by my son that my Mastervolt alternator and Alpha-pro regulator were expensive and should be repaired and reinstalled, I asked the engineer to return them. When he did this we saw at once that the alternator he brought was not mine, this one had obviously been underwater for a considerable time.

To me, it seems the two are running a scam to not repair broken parts, claiming it would cost too much, selling the cruiser a new piece of kit and not returning the old one (i.e. refurbishing it and selling it on).

I want to warn other cruisers that this kind of thing is happening here and to take care.

Checking in and out of Tukey and exchanging crew and skippers- no problem. I came to Istambul with crew, we made crew exchange- only needed agreement signed by both skippers, that we exchange crew there, and confirmation from charter agency, that htey know it. We had to purchase new transit log, that's obvoius. Check out was made in Ayvalik- highly recommend!With no agent and problems, You just need to take a walk to ferry termianl to do the clearance,and back to harbourmaster, which is close to the marina. I'll mention that yacht was Greek flag, I expected some turbulences, but was nicely surprised:)

We purchased a US registered Farr 50PH in September '14. The boat was in Didim at D-Marin marina where we left her after a quick shakedown cruise. We are secured with YachtWORKS who are resolving a number of issues we discovered on the shakedown. Our experience with Can (John) the owner of YachtWORKShas been extremely good. They are professional and the pricing reasonable for the work to date...particularly a new epoxy barrier coat system. The marina is the best ive seen with travel lifts to 600 tons albeit 4500€ for the Winter including lift. Our survey experience was also exceptional with Yusuf Civelekoglu of Marine Solutions in Bodrum. Our short time in Turkey allowed is to sail onto the North side of the Datca peninsula which was a wonderful opening into Turkey. Landside a trip to Effes is not to be missed along with Didima. New to posting here so...more in the Spring of 2015

Some Australian friends that had their boat shipped to Istanbul, and whose 90 day visa expires August 25, were told that it was absolutely impossible to get a residence permit, or even an appointment to see about a residence permit, before August 25.

They wrote to me and said that they would be wintering in Greece as a result.

I just spoke with Samet, an agent here in Finike, that I've known for about five years, and he said that it used to be difficult, but recently it is very easy. There is no longer a requirement for a Marina contract, or Turkish bank account. The only requirement is that you have health insurance, and if it is from another country, it must be international health insurance, that will cover you while you are here. And that needs to be translated into English. You will need some photos and other miscellaneous.

He says that if anyone wants to contact him, that he will be happy to help. : [email protected]

If people will contact him he will help them to get it done in Kemer. N36.60120 E30.54262 (There are several Kemers.) He says it usually takes one day. It is now very easy.

I have no idea what his fees are, but he is a really nice man that has helped me many times over the years.

I know there is still a mountain of confusion about this, but Samet, felt that it was no longer difficult, if you had the translation of the correct kind of insurance. In my American case, my very inexpensive supplemental insurance, that is a supplement to standard Medicare, claims that it will cover me for emergency rooms here, at a maximum charge of US$50.00, and a medevac will cost me a maximum of US$500.00. But read your fine print. Mine actually sounds too good to be true. Best idea is to never need it.

And, it would be good if people can relay their actual, first hand experiences, on this subject. So many of the emails seem to be rumors. And the most popular rumors are the ones that make your eyes get big, and your blood pressure boil. So, be careful what you forward.

If you want a reliable maintenance company to handle all your boat needs in or around Marmaris we highly recommend Mavimar, owned by Ercan Erkut, former naval officer,yacht builder and restorer. We have had Ercan oversee our winter work for the last 5 years on our 14 meter sailboat. We've had our boat entirely painted, electrical, plumbing, canvas and many other jobs completed ontime, at the agreed price and to our complete satisfaction. His office is located on the street opposite the tennis courts behind Netsel Marina.

Checking out of Turkey at Bodrum: We just checked out of Turkey at Bodrum. We were told that we would need an agent, but when we asked the Harbor Master he said as we only had two people on board, we did not need an agent. We did contact our agent in Marmaris, Nadide, who entered our info 'into the system' for no charge. We first visited the Harbor Master, then the Port Police (passport Control), and finally Customs. No cost and about one hour--all three offices are right near the castle and are within walking distance. Nadide at Anker Marine, Marmaris, will answer any questions and she was a great help.
