Explore: Crooked Island District
General Info
Crooked Island, Acklins Island, Long Cay, and outlying Samana and Plana Cays make up the Crooked Island District, which lies about 250 miles southeast of Nassau. The 3 main islands are inhabited by about 600 people. A 50-mile barrier reef rings the entire island chain.
Accompanied by Mayaguana, Jumentos, Ragged Islands and Great Inagua, all these islands make up the Southern Bahamas group and are often described as the “Out Islands” in many guides. These tend to be transient islands, as being up-wind the only real visitors are cruisers heading to or from the Caribbean. The locals welcome visiting yachts and the atmosphere here is quite different from the commercialism of the rest of the Bahamas.
