Yachting Essentials

This useful report by SV  Migration, who cruised Japan for over a year 2016-17, covers tips for all the essential yachting services required by visiting yachts. Notes on Cruising Japan

Electricity
Voltage: 100 V / Frequency: 50/60 Hz*

LPG
It is very difficult to find someone to fill foreign tanks. Try a small 'Mom & Pop shop), but go on your own!
The marinas at Tannowa Marina (Osaka Prefecture) and Hagi Port (Yamaguchi Prefecture) will probably be able to help.

Fuel
Many service stations won’t fill plastic fuel jugs, so you may have to try several before you can find one to fill yours.
Trucks can usually deliver diesel to your location and will likely fill your jerry jugs at the same time.
Be aware that they will always be on time! Cash is usually required.

Marine Parts
The marine industry is not big. There are not a lot of well-stocked chandleries for sailing yachts, but many for fishing boats.
Yuukou Marine is a great resource. The website (www.yuukoumarine.jp) is in Japanese, but you can email and ask in English. The company is owned by a very helpful Canadian. They ship anywhere in Japan and shipping is not expensive and very fast. Their store in Nishinomiya (Kobe) is very well stocked. They can also handle sail repairs.

Money

Yen (JYE)

Foreign cards can only be used in ATMs at Post offices, or at 7-Eleven convenience store cash machines (which are easier to find than post offices).

Communications

International Dialing Code for Japan is +81.

VHF is not normally used by yachts in Japan and you may not get an answer if you use it. Channel 16 is used for a lot of general chatter.

There is no GSM network in Japan. Renting is the most economical way for the average traveler to get a phone, and typically requires a picture ID and a credit card. Many companies have kiosks at the airports, while other companies will mail a phone to your hotel or to your home. You can return the phones at the airport or through the mail, depending on the company. International calls are not possible from the majority of public phones.

SIM cards are not available to foreigners.

A useful website to get the contacts of the various marinas where you can stop in Japan is www.umi-eki.jp (English version available). They do not all speak English on the phone though...
