COVID-19:

  • 1 July 2022, all restrictions were lifted.
  • See Clearance for normal entry protocols.

Our thanks to Marina de Lagos for assisting with rules for sea arrivals throughout the Pandemic.

Resources:

History:

  • March 18, 2020, a state of emergency was announced suspendingmost international flights, closing land borders with Spain, banningcruise ships and banning the docking and disembarkation of crew ofnon-resident recreational vessels.
  • Transiting boats were permitted to stop to re-supply where possible (many marinas closed) but crew could not go ashore.
  • The only time a foreign citizen could step ashore on Portuguese soil was is if
they had done a 14 day quarantine on board and needed to repatriate.
  • Domestic cruising was not possible during lockdown. Yachts wishing to leave Portugal had to guarantee they had a safe harbor to stop, whether in Portugal or abroad, before departure clearance was granted.
  • May 7, 2020, pleasure boating was “released”, meaning that all boats already in Portugal, whatever the flag, were permitted to move
freely between ports/marinas with prior authorization from the marina
and authorities. Borders, however, were still closed and even yachts that had undergone 14 days on board were not allowed to clear into the country.
  • In the Madeira and Azores ports and marinas remained closed.
  • June 15, 2020, maritime borders opened to all nationalities with no quarantine or testing required.
  • The Azores opened with Covid testing on arrival, Madeira remained closed until 30 June.
  • In August, restrictions started on arrivals from certain countries, but arrivals from the EU could still enter freely.
  • September 01, restrictions were tightened further allowing entry only to those travelling from the EU, from a country in the Schengen area, or from another country which had a reciprocal agreement with Portugal for accepting travelers.
  • At the end of January, 2021, a state of emergency (SOE) was declared. Land borders with Spain closed once again and entry into the country was restricted to boats in transit who were recommended to alert the SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) before arriving in Portugal (PF216.Lagos@sef.pt).
  • The SOE ended on 1 May. Only 10 or so municipalities throughout the country where the number of cases was high, either halted the deconfinement process or actually had to go back to more severe measures (such as Portimão). The remainder opened almost every activity (museums and other cultural activities, restaurants, shops, public services, schools, etc). All restrictions on pleasure boating were lifted.
  • Portugal issued new travel restrictions on 28 June in a bid to limit the spread of the more contagious Delta coronavirus variant, which was first detected in India.
  • 1 December new restrictions were announced making pre-departure testing mandatory for all arrivals. See here.
  • February 2022 rules were relaxed.
  • July 2022 all restrictions were lifted.

From the Med Sailing FB page 21st January, 2022:
We have just taken an Orca attack about 3 miles west of Cascais. Be aware they are currently here.
We have rudder damage and are heading back to Cascais port. The attack lasted around 30 minutes. We shut off the engine and electronics but were advised my the MRCC to put the engine on and use reverse. It seemed to have worked. I counted 4 orcas and we are a Dufour 56 on engine at the time of the attack.

    Bridge Height Rio Guadiana
There is some discrepancy with the height of the suspension bridge on the Rio Guadiana – Noonsite suggests 20 metres but the Royal Cruising Club Imray Publication ‘Atlantic Spain and Portugal’ on page 273
advises that the Portuguese charts show 18 metres. (referenced to Mean Sea Level)
The Navionics Chart for the River also indicates 18 m.
    Clarification ?

Some web links that you will find useful:
      https://covid19.min-saude.pt/ponto-de-situacao-atual-em-portugal/
Users with suspected COVID-19 should contact the SNS24 line – https://www.sns24.gov.pt/
It goes without saying that if visiting bars and restaurants, only pick establishments that have proper social distancing between the tables, have hand sanitizer with you and wear a mask when not sitting at your table eating etc. Follow the protocols in place in Portugal.

July and August are the worst months for fog on the west coast of Portugal (much less prevalent on the SW coast). In Galicia it can last days sometimes, but in Portugal you might get one day a week with fog.

We spent the winter 18/19 in Portimao, which gave us time to visit the other marinas on the Algarve. Our boat is 54’on deck and 62′ LOA, full length keel.
Lagos is very popular but cramped, we would not have had fun manoeuvring in there. Supermarket just across the road. Most expensive offer for a 9 months stay.
Portimao, outside of town, bus service, not so many live aboards. Facilities good, plenty of space as well as sufficient water for the boats.Boatyard on other side of river, several english speaking. Middle price offer.
Vilamora, rather shallow harbour, manoeuvring space on the small side, but good marineros. Lots of rather expensive restaurants and bars along the quays, tourists only, no traditional town or even supermarket.( 10 km to closest one). Hotels and golf courses galore. Expensive for a one night stop but cheapest winter offer.

DND: Lack of product support, Integrity and Overpriced.
I ordered an Osculatti holding tank with DND for my sailboat which was the original tank manufacturer installed. (The valve, tank, waste sensor and mascerator pump were all defective).
Despite repeatedly indicating they would rectify the selling of poor quality equipment to me, DND has not stood by their word.
Thus began what has turned into a 4+ month long struggle to attain a reasonable resolution. DND has for the most part taken the tack of complete lack of communication.
I have spent an additional 500 Euros due to the poor quality of this Osculati tank, in an effort to have it function, and it still does not work. Katia, the owner (of DND), has promised me multiple times to take back the tank and refund my money. Katia now does not take my phone calls, I am assuming, she hopes this will just go away. On November 16th, I finally got (an email promising a refund) – yet still no refund.
Additionally, DND, charged me €550 for the holding tank alone. I now have the original boat manufacturer providing a new tank AND installed for €520.
My experience warrants a warning to reconsider using DND for any serious purchase which would require support.

Warning re “Hot Marinas” on the Algarve coast. This summer there have been major corrosion issues on yachts in Villamoura and Lagos.

Make sure you have a galvanic isolator fitted to the earth cable on your shore power connection before leaving your boat there. Do not leave the power connected for long periods when you are not on board.

Six boats severely damaged in Villamoura with loss of expensive aluminium stern drives etc. Similar on F dock at lagos. Major anode loss on steel hull in a short period.
