Notice April 2022: Russian flagged or registered yachts are not permitted to enter any ports in Sweden. See news item for details.

Sweden is a member of the EU as well as a member of the Schengen Area.

With the introduction of the Europe-wide entry and exit system (EES)  (now delayed until 2024), biometric data will need to be recorded on entry and exit for third country travelers. While this negates the need to have passports stamped, it will require a visit to an official office at a port of entry, therefore flexible clearance at marinas may no longer be possible once it is implemented. It is not yet known how rigidly EES will be enforced for pleasure boat users.

ADVANCE NOTICE

Yachts coming from outside Schengen, or EU yachts with 3rd country nationals on board, or EU yachts that have passed international waters, must complete the Leisure Boat Entry/Exit Form available online and e-mail it to Border Control in advance at bordercontrol.vastragotaland@polisen.se.

The form asks for your ETA in Sweden, how long you intend to stay, crew details etc.

Border Control will then book a day and a time at your port of entry so passports can be stamped.

PORTS OF ENTRY

Falkenberg, Halmstad, Lysekil, Strömstad, Varberg or Tångudden (in Gothenburg).

ARRIVAL FORMALITIES

General Process:

Yachts arriving directly from a Schengen country (i.e. all countries bordering the Baltic Sea with the exception of Russia) with EU residents and residents from Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, do not have clear border control on arrival in Sweden. Nor Customs if there is nothing to declare.

Yachts coming from outside Schengen, or EU yachts with 3rd country nationals on board, or EU yachts that have passed international waters, must complete the Leisure Boat Entry/Exit Form available online in advance. A date and time to have passports stamped at the port of entry will be arranged with you via e-mail with Border Police.

It is not necessary to report to the Swedish Coastguard as long as the visit to Sweden is not for a commercial purpose and the vessel does not carry paying passengers. However, large yachts with passengers should send a crew list and a passenger list 6 hours before entering a Swedish port to Swedish Coastguard Maritime Clearance at sweden24@kustbevakningen.se.

If you wish to enter and exit at a location other than a designated border crossing point, you should contact the border police at bordercontrol.vastragotaland@polisen.se.

Taxable goods must be declared to Customs. See Customs for details pertaining to pleasure craft.

Customs offices are open 08:00-16:00 Monday to Friday. Outside those hours, captains must report by telephone to the nearest communications centre. The number is available from the Harbour Master.

    Simon Kirk says:

We have just arrived in Gothenborg (25/05/23) from UK and cannot find anyone remotely interested in registering our boats arrival, because it is a leisure craft, and not commercial or carrying paid passengers. We have been round the hoses with Border Police, Customes, Marine Clearance, to no avail. Struggling to see how we are going to declare our arrival date as a means of validating for Returned Goods Relief on our return.
