 Lagos - Profile

Location

Located at the western end of the Algarve, Lagos is a vibrant, historic town. The older part of Lagos is still circled by the 16th century city walls. It was also the home base of Henry the Navigator.

Position 37° 05.92'N, 08° 39.94'W (harbour entrance)

Clearance

This is an official Port of Entry.

See the Noonsite/Portugal/Formalities page for full details of clearance.

The GNR-Brigada Fiscal, Policia Maritima and Alfandega have offices in the marina reception building. Skippers only need to visit the authorities if undertaking international clearance or are staying at the marina.

Docking

On approach to the port, be aware that the end of the western breakwater is partially submerged. If entering at night, beware of isolated, black, unlit piles on the port hand side of the channel. Another hazard is the number of fishing buoys and flags immediately outside the outer breakwaters.

The marina is a few hundred metres up river from the harbour entrance and is very sheltered. Access is all-tide.

On arrival, berth on the arrivals pontoon on the sta'board side, just before the lifting bridge. This bridge opens on request, (VHF channel 09) 8am to 10pm (summer) and 9am to 7pm (winter).

Anchorages
It is possible to anchor NE of the harbour mole in 3 to 5m. This is exposed to easterly and southerly winds and some SW swell.

Alvor - A peaceful anchorage just over 2nm ENE of Lagos.

Source of Local Information
There is a very active visitors/liveaboard group called the Lagos Navigators. They have a website (http://lagosnavigators.net) which maintains up to date cruising and local information and organize various activities. From September to June a twice weekly VHF Net is broadcast at 09:30, Mondays and Fridays on Ch09.

And Sopromar can no longer arrange to have propane/LPG gas tanks filled as there was some issue with someone in town getting stopped with a car full of gas tanks.

The marina office re-confirmed that if you are on anchor, you do not need to go and see the authorities for domestic clearance. Only if you are berthed in the marina.
