Leixoes (Porto) : Profile
Located 4nm north of the entrance to the Douro river, Leixoes is the artificial harbour built to serve Porto (Oporto). It is one of Portugal's most important ports. Not the most attractive port of call, but useful to enable a visit to the historic city of Oporto.
Position 41° 11.6'N,8° 41.5'W.
Visit marina office with passports and ships papers to fill in necessary paperwork, whether berthed in the marina or anchored off.
Leixoes
The marina at Leixoes is in the NE corner of the commerical harbour; downwind of the oil terminal! It is run by an association of the three yacht clubs based there.
This port can be closed is strong westerlies.
Porto
The sand bar which used to exist at the entrance to the River Douro has now been removed and two new breakwaters are being built. A new marina is expected to be built here.
The deep water channel is on the north side. For both mooring and clearance, it is best to use the yachting facilities in the commercial port of Leixoes, which can be entered under most conditions and has a marina and three yacht clubs.
The floating pontoon in Gaia on the south bank of the Douro River no longer exists. However yachts may find berthing on the north shore, 300m west of the Eiffel Bridge, where the tidal stream is less strong.
Just to the east of Porto, on the north bank and past the Via de Cintura Inturna road bridge is a small marina run by the Sport Club do Porto. It may be possible to find a berth here.
