Figueira da Foz : Profile
A lively resort town on Portugal's west coast, midway between Lisbon and Porto. It is located at the mouth of the Mondego river.
Position 40º 09' N, 8º 52' W.
If a large sea is running at low tide this entrance can be difficult. Conditions over the bar at the entrance are broadcast on VHF channel 11. The river entrance has been dredged to about seven metres, but one should aim to cross the bar during a rising tide.
In case of poor visibility, it is advisable to contact Figueira Pilots on channel 14 or the the Maritime Authority on channel 16, before entering.
No longer necessary for EU registered yachts to visit the GNR-Brigade Fiscal and Policia Maritima unless arriving outside office hours. However skippers of non-EU registered yachts or with non-EU nationals on board should report to the officials.

The marina is on the north side of the entrance, a short distance up the river in the middle of the city.
Note that there is frequently a strong current across the marina entrance, and sometimes there may be nets strung across the river. During 2010 there are works being carried out to extend the northern breakwater and repair winter damage, and visiting yachts should exercise extreme caution as lights and marks are possibly not in their charted positions.
Visitors should berth at the the reception pontoon in front of the yellow building. Beware of very strong cross currents only a few metres from the eastern-most (largest) pontoons in the main marina when approaching.
New pontoons have been installed in the eastern part of the harbour, but as yet there are no services.
Last updated August 2010.
