Explore: Kawthaung (formally Victoria Point)
General Info
Description:
This is the principal port for the Mergui archipelago.
It is located just across the Pakchan river from Ranong, Thailand’s most northerly port on the Andaman Sea. There is a longtail boat pier at the fishing port of Ranong, which connects the two ports.
Kawthaung is not the most attractive town, being very noisy and dusty, but a photographers’ delight.
Position:
09° 58.7’N, 098° 33.3’E (daytime anchorage)
Clearance
Foreign vessels need to have a license to sail the area before entering Kawthaung,
See Formalities for full details on clearance, paperwork, and fees for foreign vessels.
Contact the Ministry of Travel & Tours (MTT) on arrival for assistance with checking in. Their office is on the southern end of the waterfront.
Vessels should anchor off the navy and Ferry Pier on the west shore of the harbor. The clearance agent will need to be picked up at the ferry pier with an Immigration officer to complete the paperwork, which is done without fuss in 10 minutes.
Be sure to have US$ cash on board to pay the fees – clean crisp banknotes with no marks. There are no banks or exchange places nearby.

Docking
The anchorage of the town is well protected, being out of the main current which flows at 2 to 3 knots. Dinghies can be safely left at the town jetty and there is a water taxi service operating until 21.00.
However, it is more comfortable at night to move further north to the east side of Bowers Island (09° 59.33’N, 098° 33.68’E). This will avoid the worst of the mosquitoes, the risk of collision with drifting boats, as well as the noise from the many longtail boats. There is good holding in thick mud. The concrete jetty ashore has both diesel and water.
Let MTT know if you plan to move.
