The quality of healthcare in Bulgaria does not meet the standards of most Western European countries. Although doctors and medical staff are highly trained, the health infrastructure has been poorly funded and many hospital facilities are in poor condition.

UE and EEA citizens can use their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) at any Bulgarian hospitals.

For life-threatening situations, emergency care is free of charge regardless of nationality, health insurance status or ability to pay.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Aside from routine vaccines, vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B are recommended.

Bulgaria is a rabies free country. However, rabies may still be present in wildlife species, particularly bats. If working directly with wildlife, a rabies vaccination is recommended.

Other Disease Concerns:

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is caused by infection with a tick-borne virus. Transmission to humans occurs through contact with infected ticks or animal blood. CCHF can be transmitted from one infected human to another by contact with infectious blood or body fluids. Insect repellants containing DEET are the most effective in warding off ticks. Wearing gloves and other protective clothing are also recommended. There is no vaccine currently available for human use.

Bulgaria has recently reported an outbreak of Bird Flu. Symptoms of bird flu range from mild eye infections to a flu-like illness. In severe cases, bird flu can cause pneumonia and death. There is no vaccine to prevent bird flu, but there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth.Only eat meat and poultry that is fully cooked.

Be aware that there is a risk of Hantavirus and Tuberculosis in Bulgaria.

Prescription Drugs:

Pharmacies can easily be found in Bulgaria’s urban centers and some hospitals. Some 24 hour pharmacies are available in larger cities such as Sofia.

Many prescription medicines can be bought over the counter. As brand name changes from country to country, it is advisable that visitors take note of the generic name of their medications.
