The ninth named storm of the Atlantic Season  – Tropical Storm Ida –  is now threatening the Cayman Islands after forming over the western Caribbean Sea from a tropical wave located north of Colombia.

Tropical Storm Ida is bearing down on the Cayman Islands

The National Hurricane Centre says this tropical storm could become a hurricane when it is near western Cuba or over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

Rainfall totals of 8 to 12 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches, are expected across the Cayman Islands and western Cuba, including the Isle of Youth, the NHC said.

The Cayman Islands National Weather Service has already issued flood and marine warning and the National Emergency Operations Centre has been activated.

Another low pressure system east of Bermuda

Another low pressure is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the central tropical Atlantic about 650 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. NHC said conditions could see it turn into a tropical depression when the system turned eastward over the central Atlantic towards the weekend.

Third system west of the Cabo Verde Islands

Meanwhile, another tropical wave over the far eastern tropical Atlantic located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands could develop into another tropical storm, as it moves west-northwest, according to the NHC.
