The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Tropical Depression 13 late last week to become the 10th named tropical storm of the 2022 season which was then upgraded to hurricane status, making Hurricane Julia the 5th named hurricane of the season.

After making landfall on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua early on Sunday, Julia had crossed the country and was over the Pacific around 135 miles (220 kilometers) southeast of El Salvador’s capital, by late Sunday evening according to the NHC.

As it moved north along the coasts of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala Julia was downgraded to a Tropical Storm but the NHC maintains a warning of “the risk of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides across Central America and Southern Mexico” through Tuesday October 11.

About one million residents of Nicaragua’s coastal region lost power and internet due to fallen lines as well as a decision by the government to cut electricity for safety reasons, said Vice President Rosario Murillo, according to local media.

The NHC said swells generated by Julia continue to affect Providencia and San Andres Islands and the Caribbean coast of Central America, but should gradually subside.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Pacific coast of Nicaragua from Puerto Sandino northward to the Honduras border, the Pacific coast of Honduras and the coast of El Salvador while a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the Pacific coast of Guatemala said the NHC.
