Vieques : Profile
Vieques and Culebra are commonly known as the "Spanish Virgin Islands". These islands are still relatively undeveloped and many think they represent what the Caribbean was 30 years ago. There are many beautiful anchorages and dive spots, with empty and pristine beaches.
There are no public moorings here, anchoring only. There is also no official dinghy dock but cruisers advise that you can use the western-most pier. No fuel, Wi-Fi or water available.
The Vieques Yacht Club is still under construction, however cruisers can call Stuart to see how things are progressing (see info. below).
Note: there is a "Yacht Club" shown on the tourist maps, but this is really just a collection of tourist shops.
Anchorages
There are several good anchorages east of Esperanza, on the south shore. However cruisers report April 2010 that most were off-limits, marked "Unexploded Ordnances".
There is an excellent hurricane hole at Ensenada Honda, which also serves as a good place to explore the countless fingers of healthy mangrove inlets and islands. The water here however is murky and there are many insects.
Cruisers warned (Feb/Mar 2009) that the (post-Navy Departure) explosives clean up was still in progress in 2009 and that Range Control warned against anchoring at Bahia del Sur as well as other anchorages.
