  Riga : Profile

Clearance

The last basin before the bridge, by the ferry terminal, is where Customs and Immigration have their offices. Yachts may go directly to the Andrejosta Yacht Centre (the former Latvian Shipping Company Yacht Club). Officials will visit the boat and complete formalities.

Docking

Riga is a major city with a large Russian speaking population. It has a car-free medieval city centre, with lots of well-kept buildings from different periods. There are cathedrals and museums, outdoor tavernas, music cafes and restaurants.

The approach to Riga is via the river Daugava. The river is wide and the stream weak, so it is possible to sail the 8 miles up to the centre, but it is a busy commercial waterway. Watch out for unlit moorings.

Call traffic control (Riga Radio) on VHF channel 16 and 09.

There are several yacht clubs in the city, but some of them are situated far from the centre. The most convenient, is the "Andrej Osta", on east side of the river, behind the ferry terminal and just down stream of the bridge.

When cruising in the Bay of Riga, unmarked fishing nets are a constant hazard.
